It's a term that we've heard time and time again, but what does it ACTUALLY mean? Well, sit back and relax as I discuss the origins of the Zenkai boost and demonstrate that it holds much more symbolism than we give it credit for.

Zenkai in a nutshell: "What doesn't kill me, makes me stronger."

The Zenkai boost as well as the Super Saiyan transformation pretty much made all the human fighters irrelevant.

I actually see the zenkai boost like this : The saiyans are a warrior race, their bodies are accustomed to battles
So when a saiyan fights somebody stronger, his body automatically will assimilate his opponent, his moves, his speed and everything
so if the saiyans survives and comes back to fight the same opponent, he will be able to face him without any problems

Oh man. I really love your DBZ analysis man. They're giving me some more material to work with! Thank you and can't wait for more.

the zenkai boost is probably the reason Black didn't wish for immortality because a sayian that's immortal will probably never get the zenkai boost again since they can never be at near death anymore. I remember Vegeta exploited the hell out of it to get stronger on Nameke.

Then I guess Trunks got one hell of a zenkai boost for him to stand up to Black and Zamasu.

Zenkai Boost is what made Yamcha a meme.  Its what made Piccolo to have to resort to absorb other Namekians just so he can keep up.

To quote Vegeta from the abridgment "Power levels are bullshit!"

In Latin American Spanish the Ending song was translated to something like "Come out of there now, Magnificent Power!"

It's bullshit is what it is.

If the humans had it, Krillin and Yamcha would have surpassed the Gods of Destruction by the Cell saga.

I honestly didn't know this much about Zenkai. Thank you, Masako.

Kind of unrelated note, but discussion suggestion. Why not talk about Goku's Flying Nimbus? It was an iconic part of Dragon Ball, and in the early Saiyan, Namek, and Buu saga, Goku and Gohan still used it despite being able to fly. How about sharing where it came from, why we don't see it anymore, and if it would be worth bringing back.

Well, zenkai boosts are BS, yes. They're a symptom of Akira's inability to write arcs without resorting to numbers (while claiming numbers don't matter.) It's why humans *apparently* will one day go extinct in the canon as those "strong saiyan genes" that never seem to go away flood the gene pool of the planet over a few centuries. But that aside: Something I always thought was interesting was how saiyans, as far anyone knows, rarely got anywhere near the galactic speed limit of 10, 000 battle power until AFTER they got off Planet Salad/Plant. They fought with one another constantly, but other than the rare historical super saiyan we never see, they never get much stronger than the Raditz to Nappa level of strength. Maybe that's why Freeza changed his mind about them. They enlisted with power levels of 1, 000 to 5, 000, just like the rest of his army, but once they started fighting other species, THAT'S when a lot of them started to skyrocket for seemingly no reason. It seems like not only do you need to nearly die, but you also benefit a LOT from recently fighting a much stronger enemy. See: Krillin injuring Vegeta (he wasn't zenkai'ing off Krillin, after all). Gohan in the Freeza fight went from an unlocked power of about 20, 000 to the MILLIONS, simply by recovering from some light injuries after fighting Freeza's second form. Goku Black gets his zenkai boosts not from major injuries, but mainly from just responding to fighting the saiyans, and especially Goku. Zenkai boosts seem to mimic or respond to the ki of way more powerful opponents. Probably why their power levels didn't go up much until they left Salad. Prior to that, a guy with a BP of 2, 000 losing to someone with a BP of 2, 500 didn't really do much of anything for either one.

...This video just made me realize something. If a Time Lord and a Saiyan had a child, that child would be unstoppable. Whenever a Time Lord regenerates, they're basically coming back from near death with a different face. Throw in some Saiyan DNA, and pow, you've got an ultra-strong being with a new body and personality ready to take on the universe.

thud the saying "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger"

Interesting. I always assumed that is was simply a side effekt of healing. Like when someone in real life breaks a bone and the damaged section grows back thicker and stronger, and that this was just more extreme with saiyans.

As CinemaSins would probably call it: Zenkai ex machina.

It does make sense if you think about it, I mean working out damages and rips you're muscles making them grow back stronger so it's kind of the same concept.
