A container ship in the process of docking collided with another ship, causing one container crane to collapse and severely damaging another at the Port of Kaohsiung today, June 3. One person was injured, and two people were trapped in the wreckage.

At at 11:30 am the 316-meter-long, 86,679 gross tonnes container ship DURBAN, owned by OOCL Shipping Company, was attempting to dock at pier 66, when it sideswiped the 32,720 gross tonne YONGYANG, belonging to Yangming Shipping, that was docked at pier 70.

The collision caused one of four container cranes, GC8 to collapse.

GC8 collapsed onto GC6.

As the container crane began to tumble to the ground, workers raced for their lives.

When the crane fell, it collided with a stack of containers, causing it to fall as well.

One worker was slightly hurt in the mishap, while two crane operators were trapped within the cranes.

Zhang, a 58-year-old man, was treated for a cut on his forearm and abrasions on one foot at Yuan's General Hospital.

Zhang also had x-rays taken to rule out any internal damage, as he was experiencing chest pain.

The imprisoned workers were finally freed at 12:44 p.m. and were unharmed, according to reports.

The Port of Kaohsiung is Taiwan's largest and the world's 15th largest port.
