A History of Thorogood Shoe Co.

Thorogood Shoes is a Weinbrenner Shoe Company that’s employee owned and has been assembling footwear in Wisconsin since 1892.

Thorogood’s parent company, Weinbrenner was formed in 1900, 8 years after Albert H. Weinbrenner — the company’s founder — opened a cobblery in Milwaukee as a 27 year old. It wasn’t until 1918 that the Thorogood line of boots was born.

By 1927, Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army in World War I. And 9 years later in 1938 they began crafting safety footwear.

In 1942 the company celebrated its 50th anniversary and produced all-military footwear for the duration of WWII, which included combat and dress styles.

At this time the military style boots became popular with civilians. And by 1964 the Official Boy Scout Boot; The Hike ‘n Camp which features a wedged sole and moccasin style stitching was released and became the company’s best-selling boot of all-time.

I have the 8inch steel toes for work, think about a pair of these 6's for the winter months to wear everywhere else.

I have the 8” steel toe. Compared directly to my 8” steel toe red wings, the thorogoods are much more comfortable. Both my red wings and thorogood are size 10 regular width but the moc toe profile of the thorogood seems to give much more room under the steel toe. The leather is also much softer on the thorogood. It may or may not last as long. Jury is still out. I’ve only had them 8 months and I’ve had my red wings for 5 years but I’ve barely worn them since I got the thorogoods. The comfort difference due to the softer leather and roomier toe is vast.
