People can take off and fly like birds. Kanellos Kanellopoulos flew MORE THAN 70 MILES under his own power in Daedalus, an HPA made by MIT in 1988. Here's a quick tour of some of the history of bio-inspired flight and work underway right now. Dr. Wolfgang Send of FESTO and Aniprop in Germany has plans for large mass flapping fliers (10 kg and 100kg) by 2016 and 2020 respectively. This is an area of study that many students can contribute to with 3D printing and modeling.
