Size matters even when it comes to martial arts. Figures like Bruce Lee remained immortal because of the debate between whether or not he was invincible. The reality is, sure technique can overcome a great size difference, but sometimes, technique just is not enough. Watch here, where the Game of Thrones actor, body builder, and strong man takes on one of Conor McGregor's team mates; Gunnar Nelson.

I did combatives in the military, and wrestled in middleschool and highschool . Guys I was 20 pounds heavier than I would destroy, guys who were 20 pounds heavier than me would stale mate me or destroy me . Experience and skill gives you an advantage in a fight , but so does size and strength. Weight classes exist for a reason

The problem here ain't only the size, but the strength plus the size

Gunner just let the mountain sprawl, Gunner is being a good partner/ coach and letting the mountain get his reps in.
Yes the mountain could over power him if he got on top obviously, learning the correct technique/ chain of moves is key 🔑

Many people here probably haven't had the joy or understanding of Gunnars ground game. His BJJ competitions are a pleasure to watch. Phenomenal skills!🙏 respect

I’m 5’2 135 lbs I got in a tussle with this huge guy and despite being able to out perform him
It was as simple as him eventually realizing he just needed to lay on top of my face and suffocate me.
And spread his arms and legs out like a star so I couldn’t flip him over.

People say size doesn’t matter but it’s as dumb as saying a woman can do anything a man can do.
Yah it’s not the end all be all and heart goes a long way but physics is real.
I can put box many bigger people because I’ve only sparred 6’0+ people since I was 16 but even then if a skilled boxer hit me with full strength being 60+ lbs over me it would be humbling
But what I find is most people don’t want to hurt smaller people
And tend to hold back because they’re humane and like dogs
The bigger dog lets the smaller dog win a % of the time or else the small dog won’t play anymore.

if thor was 100 lbs bigger like he was a few years ago, for strongman, then Gunnar would have even less options. for instance, he wouldnt even be able to get his arms far enough around Thor's torso to effectively do anything

Keep in mind Thor is being very polite and going maybe 60%

Thus weapons. You never fight your opponents fight. You fight to go home

You do realize, Halfthor tapped out a few times in that full video. The MMA guy got him in several different submissions and he couldn’t break out.
Plus this was taken when Halfthor lost some weight and was training in MMA then. Also just recently, he got tapped out by a Jujutsu guy. Sure he was bigger than the last guy but not by much. Like he was still half of Thor’s size and weight.

Gunnar Nelson is 170 lbs and putting on one hell of a fight with someone nearly twice his size with significantly more physical strength.

To be fair, the Mountain isn't just some big guy.
He was the world champion in Strongman.
6'9 and 320 lbs.

He trained his whole life for strength competition, at world champion-level.

He might not be a martial artist/fighter. But he is also an EQUAL practician in physicality, if not more!

Practice matters the most.

Since the Mountain is a world champion (in different sport), and 6'9 320+ lbs.

I do believe Jon Jones 6'4 230+ lbs would be a more fair match.

Size Matters in stand up and ground game
I would say it matters more on the ground since you have to more directly deal with their strength.

In comparison to stand up your still dealing with it but not constantly where in grappling it’s almost always present.

In striking you can fight around them, tire them out, can use speed much more easily than on the ground.

Training helps like for like, it can even help when slightly overmatched in size, if there is a skills deficit... BJJ lacks ground and pound... where size matters.

David Gemmel wrote (for Druss, in the theatre of bareknuckle boxing) that " *A good big man will always beat a good small man* "

Edit: take the rules away and the results often differ.

yea with the weight/height difference. If this were a street fight and Connor made a mistake, Thor could just drop his weight on Connor's neck and he's done.

There gets to be a point where only stuff like half guard and butterfly can keep the weight off you, and thats if you can get it to the ground. Honestly youre so physically outmatched that a guard pull to leg lock is about your only option

With equal training a 15% weight gap is a noticeable strength and power difference. 30% is pushing it but otherwise reasonably doable. Anything above 50% and you're in an uphill battle.

I kinda agree, but that's steroids strenght.
It's not really a fair comparison.

This may be true in some cases but a man with somewhat lean muscle mass at 320lbs is a extremely rare case

Other advantages:
More men, weapons, better weapons, armour, better armour, suply disruption, ambush, war of atrition (if you can go with no sleep longer than he can, you have yourselfe an easy target),
Nonlethal hinderances (peperspray, bright light, flashbang to blind the oponent) intimidation by being confident or crazy...

You can get creative in war.
Stay moral tho.
