If the methane that is presently bound up in the hydrate ice which is in the permafrost starts to melt and is released into the atmosphere, we are looking at thermal runaway and global catastrophe.

Yes we are. I just did an essay on this and it's worse than I thought. The oceans have been absorbing approximately 90% of the excess atmospheric heat since the industrial age and it has been mitigating the effects of global warning, until now! We are currently at 1.1°C and will very likely reach 1.5°C at or before 2050 (𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟰𝟲 𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲) at which point 70-90% of all our worlds coral reefs are expected to be gone. I put it at closer to 90%. There are 16 tipping points that have been identified. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet has just recently been reported to have past its tipping point (𝗺𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲) and will now melt until it's gone. As each tipping point is past it may cause a domino effect and cause more tipping point to go.

That 1.1°C increase is an average .08°C increase per decade (since the industrial age), but since 1981 to 2021 we are now increasing at .18°C per decade (more than doubled) meaning the temperature increase is ACCELERATING. But that .18°C probably happened in 2001 so now the increase is probably at or greater than .2°C. Climate change is coming at us much faster than anyone imagined.

The three worst greenhouse emitters are China, US, and India. China is outputting 29.2% of worldwide emissions, India is doing great at reducing their emissions and are about 7.2%, the US is at 11.2% and we are improving, but slowly due to political resistance from Republicans. The US has been decreasing (slowly) since 2007. China is INCREASING. More than half of all power generation in China is from COAL. So which country is worse?

There is no way in hell we will reach the renewed Paris Agreement goal of 1.5°C by 2050. Even India, who is doing well, does not expect to be carbon neutral until 2070. The outlook is VERY, VERY GRIM.

Feel free to check these facts.

We teetered a while ago but now we are sliding fast downhill towards the midden.

No we are not teetering on the brink, it's already to late we are screwed

There is one ray of hope… Even though it’s small in 2023 we will have sold more than 1 million EV’s in this country that sets a new record.. so things are slowly changing

So when we're supposed to reducing fossil fuel dependence on a colossal scale, we're speeding in the opposite direction? I've already accepted our collective fate as a species. Glad I will never have kids.

Teetering? We're over the cliff, hanging on by our fingertips.

If we were going to do anything significant to abate climate change, we would've done so decades ago. Sadly, it seems that we've collectively decided to just let it happen and leave future generations holding the bag. This will result in widespread food/water insecurity, refugee crises, war over dwindling resources, increasingly fascists governments etc. And we'd rather just find some scapegoats to blame than actually solve the problem. I feel sorry for those left to inherit this catastrophe. We've failed them in stewardship of the planet.

The US, Canada, Australia, Norway and the UK will be solely responsible for half of mankinds "blowing through the World's dwindling carbon budget"? The middle east oil producers (Saudis et.al.) and Russia are now no factor regarding the carbon budget?
Thom, I am beginning to seriously doubt your credibility.

In what way is Fartmann slightly relevant to this matter?
