POP CULTURE: Why Music Works

Music may be the finest therapy humanity has ever invented.

FURTHER READING

“One of the most calming things that societies have ever devised is the lullaby. In almost every culture there has ever been, mothers have rocked and sung their babies to sleep.
A humbling point that a lullaby reveals is that it’s not necessarily the words of a song that make us feel more tranquil. The baby doesn’t understand what’s being said but the sound has its effect all the same. The baby is showing us that we are all tonal creatures long before we are creatures of understanding. As adults, we grasp the significance of words of course, but there remains a sensory level which cuts through and affects far more than an argument or an idea ever could. The musician can, at points, trump anything the philosopher might tell us….”

“Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything” - always been a favourite quote of mine.

Ten months ago I gave birth to my daughter, and I remember the first time I sang to her - alone in the maternity ward, when the nurses had finished with us and her dad had gone out for coffee - she opened her eyes wide and stared at me in wonder. I don't have a particularly great singing voice, but just hearing the melody seemed to awaken her to the world for the first time. She has loved music ever since.

Dudes this gave me chills, thanks for this.
Side note: please allow for people to edit the CC or subtitles so we can translate them instead of going through the machine, this piece should be seen everywhere.

A year ago I happen to witness a live act by a band named "Noori" from Pakistan. They were absolutely brilliant as a live act. I happen to go on Youtube and look for their videos. What pleasantly surprised me was the comment section. Being a person from India, comment section used to deeply disturb me and was tired of seeing India-pak hate stewing everywhere. Each of my effort to Subdue that by pointing out that we are all one and the reason for hatred is just something cooked up by mass media was vastly overlooked. But the comment section under Noori band's videos were different. There were comments which expressed love and respect towards each other country. Music had done what words failed to do. I could see music unite people.

Love you all.

PS: I even had the opportunity to meet Noori band-mates before and after the show. Could see where their beautiful music comes from, from humble and beautiful people.

“Music is a science, it heals depression, it awakens, most people don’t know, they just take music for an entertainment, something to dance to, and enjoy yourself and you go to bed and forget it tomorrow, music must never be forgotten, it’s like a fountain that keeps on flowing.”
- Peter Tosh

I swear my brain is made out of music. I've felt crushed at times. Friends smarter and more accomplished have looked down on my desire to devote my life to music, like it was egotistical. Thank you SO MUCH for putting this into words for me. It really helped. This is my favorite video from you guys so far.

I'm not a religious person, but I suppose music is the only "spiritual" feeling I can reliably return to. This Tom Petty lyric sums it up perfectly:
"And all those boys that play that rock and roll? /
They love it like you love Jesus, /
It does the same thing to their souls."

I grew up in the 90s, music was very special to all of us. First of all, the only way the access music was to buy the audio casette or CD. I had to save a month of lunch money to buy an album. This made us appreciate it a lot more. The best part was calling all your friends home because you had the latest album. We friends would get together create mix tapes for each other, listen together and act like we were performing in a concert! I realise the main this was the shared experience, musoc gave us something to do together. Once we grew up and we started having chance to drive a car, we friends would be singing our favorite songs at the top of our voices! Man ... Those were the best days of my life.

I have been watching all of your videos for months now, but this was definitely my favorite. I am not entirely sure why, but I feel that I will come back and view this several times again in the future.
