Too Risky! NASA's Astronauts Back on Starliner. NO SpaceX Rescue...
The terrifying adventure of the Starliner crew continues, leaving many curious about how it will end. However, contrary to public expectations, the ending will be just as risky as the preceding events.
NASA has announced that the two astronauts will still return on the Starliner.
No Dragon. No support here.
So why has NASA made this decision? And how are the astronauts reacting?
Let’s find out on today’s episode of Alpha Tech:
Boeing's Starliner spacecraft and its crew have been in space for over a month — much longer than the initially planned one week. However, the two astronauts piloting this historic test mission mostly praised the vehicle that took them to the International Space Station, marking the first crewed flight of the spacecraft manufactured by Boeing.

In a short press briefing from the space station, Barry “Butch” Wilmore, a veteran of two previous spaceflights said that “we’re absolutely confident” in the return trip and that despite the issues on the way to the station, Starliner was “truly impressive.”
Still, as he took over manual control of the autonomous spacecraft as it approached the station on June 6, he “could tell that the thrust was degraded,” he said. “At the time, we didn’t know why, obviously. The failures had just happened. You could tell it was degraded, but it was still impressive.”
Sunita Williams, who is also on her third spaceflight, said she has “a real good feeling in my heart that the spacecraft will bring us home, no problem.”

But when that will happen is still unclear.
Although they have undergone three review and problem-solving meetings, as of the most recent meeting on July 10, NASA and Boeing officials still do not have a satisfactory answer for the return date of the two astronauts currently on the ISS. Steve Stich, who oversees NASA’s commercial crew program, is optimistic that the Starliner will return by the end of July, this is merely an estimated timeframe, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the return date for the two astronauts is further delayed.
However, it is certain that NASA and Boeing will never abandon the Starliner and rely on another spacecraft to bring the two astronauts back to Earth.

Boeing has said that they are no longer going to work in this market because it's not cost plus. They do not know how to operate in an open market.

Imagine the headline “SpaceX rescues Boeing” They would rather have the astronauts in a life death situation than that.

people, they said the same with the challenger space shuttle that exploded. Overconfidence got them blinded and of course the pressure of corporate leaders. They don't really care, they are schedule-driven by the shareholders. it's all about money.

If skyliner burns out with the 2 astronauts entering earths atmosphere, then Boeing should be sewed for multi millions ! Boeing gets too much slack from NASA !

As an engineer in the aviation industry, we don't set maximum times lightly, I wouldn't want to be retuning on anything from space with batteries near or beyond the maximum set limit by engineers.

Safety for the astronauts is of paramount concern to every countries.
It is an occupational hazard to be an astronaut.
NASA should stop making excuses for Starliner deep seated problem and start preparing a mission to bring the astronaut home.

Sounds like tiles falling off of the Space Shuttle. Oh it's ok its not that many. What happened ? I don't have to explain. Bring them back on Dragon and let Starliner come down own its own.

Just let Starliner come back to Earth under computer control and then allow Crew Dragon to "assist" Suni and Butch....pretty clear that this is the safe way!

All I can do is keep shaking my head. Common sense seems to be in short supply these days.

Wouldnt want this to be another Columbia.

It would be very sad if political and commercial considerations override the safety of the astronauts. Starliner should be sent back remotely and they should return in a known good capsule the only one of which is dragon.

Boeing doesn't have a face to lose, it's already lost!! sorry to say. If I recall they lost either 4 or 5 thrusters in transition to the ISS, not sure if there is a total of 9 or 10 but that's significant percentage.

they only have 45 its day 36. How long do they wait to tell us that dragon needs to go get them.

Stayliner might have had the thruster and helium issues patched up enough to last the trip home. What scares me most is what else will fail that is unknown as yet. It should be a no brainer to bring Stuckliner back on autopilot and rescue Butch and Sundance with Crew Dragon. Even tthat is beyond NASA and Boing collective mind to grasp.
These press conferences sound very similar to the ones where NASA were say "it's only a lightweight foam so we don't see a problem with bringing the shuttle back". 😢

This has all got a really, really bad feeling to it... As others have suggested, best option here would be to undock Starliner with nobody inside, then send it into an automated return to earth. Then, send up a Dragon to get the astronauts.

You got a 80/20 chance of making it back alive, but we really need to support our businesses in the congressional districts. Soooo, we really want you to jump on this wild ride and hope for the best. If you make it, great, you will be heros. If not, you are heros that gave your lives for congressional kickbacks and good old boy contracts.

Boeing has a history of offing whistleblowers, I guess the astronauts are expendable also.

They would be very crazy riding the Starliner back to earth. NASA has had a history with the Space Shuttle that risks lives with fatal outcomes. Just to save face NASA will compel the two astronauts to ride this death ship back to earth.

If Boeing has to dump Starliner from the space station what options would they have? Uncrewed automated return, or push it into retrograde orbit, or put it in a stable orbit for collection by SpaceX Starship variant, or move to unused docking port, or some other option?

I don't see how it's more risky for the space x capsule to do it getting up looks like the more risky part.
