The problem is that they don’t know how to think about the question. It’s not just schooling but it’s actually trauma’s impact. My granddaughter is almost 11. She can’t do a word problem because she reads it and doesn’t know how to examine the written text for the information. She just keeps quickly pulling out guesses until she gets it right. But I’m like “slow down and let’s look at what the words are saying.” Her mind goes a thousand miles a second. But when I walk her through it she can do it. That’s what’s happening in most of these situations. They’re just guessing because they are not hearing and processing what the question is even asking. Why say Italy about a question about the location of the Vietnam war? Except you’re not thinking about the question. They’re just guessing.
