Adult elephants have excellent control of their prehensile trunks, so this one was quite capable of simply taking the food from the hand of the woman offering it. Yet it chose instead to twist the end of its trunk and present the flattened underside, allowing the woman to place the food there. Given the intelligent of elephants I am left wondering if it perhaps picked up on not just the woman's intent, but her hesitancy, her nervousness, and so chose to accept the food in a manner designed to be non-threatening

There are a few wild elephants on this Sri Lankan road that behave this way. They are generally NOT a threat. Unfortunately, people have spoiled them by offering food. As a result of that, they associate food with vehicles and are now DEMANDING it from every passing vehicle.
Every vehicle needs a bunch of bananas or sugarcane for safe and hassle-free passage! Consider it as a "protection" toll :))

Elephants are extremely intelligent, and this one has adapted the concept of the toll road to its needs. That lady was smart enough to recognize what the elephant was doing and paid her toll. Elephant seemed pretty chill after getting its nanners.

Ive worked with elephants. She took a big chance. They are the closest animal to humans emotionally that I have ever been around. If it had been having a bad day that women could have ended up dead in a few seconds. Its very hard to judge how they will react and their mood can change in an instant. If you are ever in this situation, do NOT do this.

ASIAN elephant, folks. They're quite gentle most of the time, and until recently were commonly used in road construction, etc. When you live with elephants your whole life, you probably have a much better idea of how to approach them than a bunch of YouTube know-it-alls.

I loved how he calculated that she was trying to hand him something and that the best way to receive it was to twist his trunk and have her lay it on top which would allow him to carry it up to his mouth and set it in. The amount muscle control to do all that as he twists, lifts and rotates that trunk is phenomenal!
