Two Sycamore Stub Cuts 5+ Years Later

Another great example of how pruning large lambs can be done in a 2 step process. It's so important to understand that decay is natural in a tree.

If we allow the natural process to proceed the tree can handle that type of decay but if a large chainsaw cut is made too close to the main stem, there can be a process of decay that will destabilize the entire tree. This cut uses common sense over science. The present paradigm in pruning is extremely flawed in that it has relied on discoloration as criteria for measurement, which ignored the possibility that some decay/discoloration is well tolerated by the tree, while other types of decay will destabilize the tree's structure

I applaud your methods Dan. You take theories, perform experiments in the real world (over years of waiting), observe the results, and then share them with us. I love the internet for this stuff! You don't encounter this type of ingenuity in the academic world often enough. This is what the arboricultural knowledge base needs, tangents and tinkering to develop ideas for deeper research. Keep it up with these awesome short videos of your experience. Provokes thought and I'm considering these concepts in my work.

I really like these videos. Helps understand What’s actually healthier for the tree. Appearance < health. Nice work Daniel!

THAT'S A VERY INTRIGUING THOUGHT PROCESS..I RECENTLY COMPLETED ARBORIST TRAINING SO WAS EXPOSED TO MULTIPLE INSTRUCTORS AND NO ONE MENTIONED LEAVING STUBS THEN COMING BACK...ASIDE FROM THE CLASSES I'VE BEEN IN THE TREE CARE INDUSTRY FOR MANY YEARS AND NEVER CAME ACROSS SOMEONE WHO INTRODUCED THAT STRATEGY..THIS WILL PROVIDE A GREAT CONVERSATION WITH THE NEXT ARBORIST I MEET..ENJOY YOUR VIDS..THEY ARE DIFFERENT.BE SAFE.

When I see that it makes me think of when I'm dead wooding a tree they naturally do exactly what those stubs do. Basically you remove the hazardous part of the tree that could fail (assuming that's why the limb was being removed) and then let the tree "shed" the smaller limb off the way it naturally would do. I like that.

As arborists we are given a certain amount of knowledge and education but what and how we use it are what separates the good from the great

I feel like if someone doesn’t know how to make proper cuts they need to practice them on the ground with stuff they’re about to chip

Sycamores do not easily compartmentalize.uts made just off the brace collar will call ace over very quickly limiting the time for pathogen infection. Just an opinion from a 50 plus year arborist.

Interesting. Would you say this strategy applies more to smaller branches (under 8 inches) where one would be able to see 3-4 years down the line how the tree reacts with the new collar growth? I can’t see a larger stem / stub putting on enough growth to make the collar obvious further down the line... hmmm.. Thinking out loud. Thanks a lot, Daniel!
