Today we discuss a potential future of virtual desktops, web apps, and if we are closer to that future or is there another future ahead for computing and operating systems?

The OS matters to anyone who cares about privacy and about owning the computer and its software, rather than essentially renting it.

Yea the web browser is more important than the OS, however, you don't want your OS too be leaking your info, so that rules out modern windows systems, Mac os too a lesser extent leaving only linux as a reasonable option.

Same goes for mobile Google android is bad, apple is better but you need to make sure you change some options, De-googled android ( with the ability to control background apps) or linux is the way forward.

Cloud services that can access your data is also awful.

I am being truly honest here, the only three applications I need - Firefox, File Explorer, and a text editor.

OS that boots into a browser? Isn't that ChromeOS?

It depends on whether you want to own your computer or rent it. For me, it's owning it - so I run Linux.

Of course it matters, privacy, monopolies, control, cost, and the open source philosophy can only benefit us all.

Yes the OS matters, and it matters a lot from the most point o views either noticeable or not.

How about a phone with HDMI/Screen mirroring/Cast your screen?

Yes, it matters, because they all have their own slew of huge fucking issues (yes that includes linux). I use what works for me, which is windows with a dash of linux. Cloud 'workstations' are horrendously expensive when you can just host your own and use something like parsec to log into it. Macs are not allowed to get licensed for virtualization on other OSes or servers so with that in mind, together with having the most closed walled garden, Apple can rot in hell as far as I'm concerned.

Great video, very informative and balanced. I agree with you - I still dual-boot between Fedora Linux and Windows, since I can't play Roblox with my daughter currently on Linux. But otherwise I am almost never in it.

Yup, it matters a lot. As soon as corporations start getting greedy and looking for ways to enshittify your OS, there's only one OS that can resist that.

i hope we reach that day when the OS dont matter, i will stick with linux anyway, but at least, if i decided to use windows one day, it will be because i want not because i'm forced to.

i hate when i have to use windows, in part because i dont like windows that much, but mostly because i feel it was forced upon me.

In capitalism everything that supports enterprises with money, data or both matters! The *only relevant* question is which evil enterprise you want to support or avoid. If there's no decent choice the preferably the currently least dangerous enterprise is the only choice we have. Luckily there's Linux, so we don't need to choose between the Redmond plague and the Cupertino cholera.

I use windows to game and for some open source software for various tasks (libreoffice etc) but mostly live inside of firefox. At work I pretty much live in salesforce and chrome and before that my previous job it was all chrome OS and chrome

Mac OS in Big Cat days were great. Tiger, Jaguar actually rekindled my love for OS. Now Mac OS is a cartoon OS. Designed by probably iOS team.
After many years Linux has now rekindled that love again for OS.

IMO off-site cloud services have a function for mobility but as for privacy and security I wouldn't trust the cloud provider as far as I could pee into the wind. Then there is the risk the cloud provider could hold your data hostage or go out of business without notice. You have to weigh the risks and I am biased to keep computer operations local in house.

I guess it matters depending what you need or how you feel about your privacy. I use Linux for almost everything on my main gaming PC but also have a laptop with window 11 on it just in case for things but though i'm probably gonna duel boot it.
