Voices II: featuring Oxi One, Moog Matriarch and Arturia MicroFreak

UPDATE:
This track is now available to purchase or stream from all the normal places via my album release “Voices”.
Please visit my LinkTree page for shortcuts to the Apple Music/Spotify pages etc.
====================================
Another work in progress.
My plan for these by the way will be to assemble enough for an album or EP.
They will be created from the stems recorded here and additional parts. Therefore, you won’t necessarily see a ‘finished’ version on YouTube as it will be released as a complete piece through the usual channels (Bandcamp, Apple Music, Spotify etc)
This piece features voices from Spitfire Labs Epic Choir and Cinematic Instruments Les Femmes virtual instruments. There are also non voice parts from UVI’s Quadra Traveller instrument.
The main arpeggio parts are from the MicroFreak with a bass part added by the Matriarch.
Effects from PolyMoon delay and Specular Tempus reverb.
This video also includes some more not very helpful comments from Clive the Cat. Clive loves the Matriarch and gets upset if I don’t use it.
The Detail:
The MicroFreak arpeggio part started life as a part I had programmed on the Roland J6. I wanted a bit more flexibility on changing up the notes played so I recorded the midi out from the J6 into the Oxi sequencer.
Once in the Oxi I could edit and save different patterns accordingly.
The MicroFreak is going through a cheap Donner Echo Square delay pedal on a filtered delay setting (the MicroFreak is almost always going through this pedal it’s great), and also the PolyMoon delay.
I then programmed the same arpeggio part into the MicroFreak’s own sequencer. This was meant to be playing a variation via its Spice/Dice feature but as demonstrated in the video, something went wrong and it wouldn’t play correctly. I’ve got a feeling I accidentally changed the sequencer rate so it was playing the sequence at the wrong note division - I’ll have to work out what I did wrong.
I can re-record this bit working properly quite easily and edit it into the final track.
The VST instruments are sequenced by Oxi One via the Gig Performer host software. I’ve been using Gig Performer for a number of years and it’s an excellent tool for a dawless setup where you still want to access VST instruments or effects. I guess this would be referred to as a ‘hybrid’ setup where I’m still using a computer in part, but not a DAW.
The first voice(s) you hear is the Cinematique Instruments Les Femmes intimate choir playing an edited preset. This is going through the Specular Tempus reverb. The other voices singing the syllables are from Spitfire Labs Epic Choir.
These have a small amount of PolyMoon delay added.
The melody part and associated ornaments come from UVI’s Quadra Traveller instrument via a modified preset. The main melody part is played by some bell instruments and an alpine horn. The patch also has some rhythmic elements from a guitar and another little synth part which are triggered by the patch’s own pattern/phrase sequencer.
I’ve started using some UVI instruments as I have recently bought into their subscription model where you basically get access to all their instruments for a monthly fee. I was subscribed to the Roland Cloud but found I wasn’t really using it so cancelled it for the UVI one instead. Liking it so far. Finding it more useful to me than the Roland one.
The Matriarch bass part is played live over the sequenced parts but, again, as evidenced in the video, there are multiple mistakes. It should really be sequenced so I could keep my hands free to change Oxi patterns and tweak synth parameters, but alas I didn’t do that.
I will re-record the bass part for the final version.
If theres any specific questions about this or any other video, please ask in the comments. I do usually try and respond to everyone commenting.
Thanks for watching (and reading this far…)
