Learning how to grow sweet potatoes is surprisingly easy – just a few plants provide a plentiful harvest.

Sweet potatoes aren’t grown from seed–they are started from slips – rooted sweet potato shoots grown from a mature sweet potato.

Sweet potatoes need a long, warm growing season, are heat-tolerant and drought-resistant, and have very few pests or diseases.

I planted my slips from sweet potatoes grown in my yard the year before from slips. To my surprise it grew beautiful white flowers with deep purple accents!

I have one of these jammed into a half-gallon jar in my bathroom. The thing has 8 foot vines sticking out. The slips that develop have roots already. I pop them off, stick them in water overnight, then plant them into damp soil. They're in the house still, but are ready for the sunshine!

They also can grow from vine cuttings.

You can also collect the young leaves of the sweet potatoes and stir fry them with garlic and a little bit of oyster sauce (fish sauce) salt and pepper. It's a really delicious dish

You can actually grow from the tuber as well the slips form on the tuber. And grow. The rotting tuber can cause insects and mold though so better to seperate but of course the tuber can also be planted.

lol the potato already rooted you don’t need to cut the slips to reroot them. The slips (on the potato) will turn into vines and they’ll grow more root along the ground and making more sweet potatoes.

I bury my sweet potato about halfway up the side in a shallow tray of dirt and I get slips way faster than when I do it in water.

Hello how long does it take roots to form and should I have it directly in sun light? I had it in water for a week but nothing was growing yet. Thank you for your feedback

I laid two sweet potatoes in a dish pan on my side yard and pretty much forgot about them. It's a side I hardly walk on... Two months later vines were everywhere! Vines sprawled the entire length of the house and everywhere it touched the ground, it made sweet potatoes! 🤯

For sweet potatoes * ONLY *
The leaves are edible and can be cooked like spinach.
White potatoes can NOT have their leavess eaten.

Thank you for this info. Curious how long did the slips take to grow that big?

Why doesn't it work with some sweet potatoes? It used to be so easy to make a sp sprout in water and now not. Are they treated, modified or something? Thanks

You don't need to do all that. They will sprout slips on a shelf in your garage and the slips grow just fine if you toss them directly into the ground about 2cm below the surface. Its much more important the environment you are in and the soil you plant them in as far as how fast they grow and how much yeild you get off each slip.
I saw a really good video about it the other day that got right to the point, but I don't know how to find it again. It was on a real small channel with a few hundred subscribers, but very well produced.

Questions 🙋🏻‍♀️, how many slips per 10 grow bag? Do you add soil to the top of the bag like with white potatoes?

I see that you use grow bags in Arizona desert. Do you have a video clip explaining how to deal with watering issue using grow bags in a hot and dry climate? I use grow bags only in the winter since our summer is hot and dry; 100+ degrees for July-Sept.
