That's a shame about Kellie Waymire. I was unaware that she died back then. I wonder how much more her character would have developed and perhaps become a mainstay throughout the entire series otherwise.

How is Kess more or less forgettable than over Tasha Yar or Dr. Pulaski? So many charaters that didn't make a full season that would have been great choices.

Yeoman Smith’s actress explained, shortly after filming the second pilot, she was offered the role in the film “The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming!” But she was told, “you either do the film or you do the series.” Not knowing how successful Star Trek would be, she chose to do the film. 🤷‍♂️
And according to her, Gene Roddenberry was very nice as was everyone else since it was her first acting role, but she had no idea he wanted to sleep with her until decades later when someone told her about it.

Honestly, I always assumed M'Benga was a passenger in A Private Little War, because it's hard to believe that Kirk wouldn't know about a crew member's qualifications until McCoy brought them up.

I wonder if that guy who pretty much became Tom Paris (played by the same actor) qualifies.
