Moving to or living in Serbia currently? But you're mostly focused on living in Belgrade... or Novi Sad even? Well, Niš has entered the ring. It's underrated as a desirable city in Serbia to live in. So I'm explaining in this video why I base myself here and not Belgrade when I am in Serbia. And as I'll explain, the cost of living in Serbia's Nis is much more advantageous than in Belgrade.

My mom is from Niš and her parents are still there, i am from Belgrade and this is my take:
-Niš has extremely cheap taxi service compared to Belgrade. Most rides will be between 250-350 din.
-Niš is flat, so you can buy a bicycle and go anywhere in 20 min top
-People drive their cars way slower so it is a safer environment
-Speciality shops, like bakeries are a bit cheaper in Niš
-Dentists are also way cheaper. Many people come from the EU to Niš to fix their teeth
-Niš is greener than Belgrade, there are more trees, parks, benches and its a cleaner place, as people dont litter as much
-There are more second hand shops which can be really cheap for the high quality clothes

Belgrade and Novi Sad have successfully revitalized themselves. It's time for Serbia to focus it's attention on Niš and Kragujevac. Serbia needs several strong economic centers that will help it develop more uniformily and in turn reduce the need for the whole of Serbia to migrate to Belgrade.

I am from Nis and my family is living in the city for 120 years now. I really like your video but I think that you missed the most crucial thing about Nis. I think that the best thing about Nis is the food. Nis has one of the best cuisines in Europa. Everybody should visit legendary Nis kafana`s.

Number 1 reason to live in Niš: You just may get lucky and catch a glimpse of Amerikanka walking down the street. Never been to Nis, looks like a pretty city with good vibe.

That Is my city. Niš Is famous for its food. Our traditional restaurants we call "kafane" (plural) "kafana" (singular). In kafana you can eat Serbian traditional food. In restaurants (we call them only restaurants, not kafane), you can eat international food. My recommendation is kafana "Orač", kafana "Dagi Plus", kafana "Aleksić", kafana "Stambolijski". Our most famous salad is "Šopska salata". Always ask the waiters what they recommend of the food.
As you said, Niš has a beautiful nature. Everything is close. Novi Sad is much nicer and cleaner than Niš, but we southerners are much more open to socializing. If you like to get to know Serbia and its beauties, I recommend you to visit western Serbia: Zlatar mountain, Zlatibor mountain, Tara, Vrnjačka spa, Pešter, Koviljača spa, various Serbian monasteries from the Middle Ages. Eastern Serbia: Kladovo (city on the Danube), Srebrno jezero, Golubac fortress... In the south there are mountains: Besna kobila, Čemernik, Stara planina... I assume you have seen the north of Serbia: Novi Sad, Subotica, Sombor, Vršac, Fruška Gora (mountain)...
If you have any questions about Niš or Serbia, I am at your service. I've been all over it so I know everything about my country.

Dear Amerikanka, thank you for creating this wonderful video. As a student of tourism, it was a pleasure to hear these beautiful comments about Niš. One place I would absolutely recommend is restaurant Svrljižanka. They have a 50 year long tradition in the hospitality industry! Enjoy.

Niš is the most definitly best city in Serbia!!! I am in love with it!! Ako razumete srpski, reći ću vam da nigde nisam doživeo takav spoj spontanosti i mistike kao u Nišu.

I've been to Niš for a one-night stopover with my family twice the last few years. Both times there was some festival going on so lot of people in the streets and everybody was happy. First time we also took a private guide which was really interesting as I am a history nerd and Niš has got a lot of history. Really recommend people to do the same.
You did not really mention the food. I know you are more into seafood but Niš is truly a gastronomic heaven, especially regarding traditional slow food. Stuffed dried peppers, mučkalica, various stews, quality of veggies and dairy products and excellent wines from the region makes it worthwhile to go there only for this reason as well.

I lived in Niš with my husband for 1.5 years after I graduated college, we’re in NY now but I miss my home so much 😢 I miss “Siesta bar, Komuna and Tramvay”. You will 100% get more stares in Niš but people are a little friendlier in my opinion than in Belgrade ☺️

I love Niš too. As a matter of fact, I am moving to Niš in January! Agree 100% with everything you said. I would like to add, another thing about Niš, is the beautiful people. I have never seen such kind and helpful people anywhere.

We moved from Belgrade to Nis when i was a teenager and it didn't take me too long to promise myself not to move from here unless career forces me to. Luckily, it didn't. Working remotely since forever and still loving it. Has everything you need, yet not overcrowded, traffic easier to handle, cheaper, absolutely no crime (vs Belgrade where i was regularly robbed as a kid in 90s), people are more relaxed and way more accessible.
Whenever something starts bothering me (like traffic etc) i just go to Belgrade for a few weeks and see how bad can it actually be :)
Black people are so rare here, so just like in the rest of the Serbia, they are a true attraction and we love them, but its more pronounced here than in BG - it may bother you, you may love it, but it is what it is :) Either way, welcome!
..and I saw you a few times in Kazandzijsko a year or two ago (and no, im not being racist, it WAS you :) so I'm glad you are still loving it.

Nice video! I hope you really enjoyed your stay in Nis. You are absolutely right about those 4 reasons that you have highlighted in your video, but I would add some more, like awesome food and friendly people... Anyway, thank you for being our guest. 🙏🙂
