What is a preselector and yes it can improve shortwave reception

Preselector can help with overload and also reduce interference in some cases, it is often mistaken for a antenna tuner, which it is not

This reminds me of a device that I bought from Panasonic directly. Panasonic’s preselector was a neat addition to the RF 2200 when I bought it. It was a very simple design but worked great. This was an outboard unit connected with the antenna and ground.

The DX300/302 were fitted with a preselector as was the FRG7 and Racal RA17 as part of the design of the Wadley loop architecture, NOT because of any inherent fault with the design. These early "synthesised" analog receivers were very good for their time and far outperformed the cheap consumer radios of today. All the modern up converted superhets use a broadbanded front end, as does the DSP versions, making them prone to overloading and cross modulation.

My Sony 6800W has a built-in preSelector and it works great. That's what makes it a true DX radio.

I have this exact same MFJ preselector in a box in the closet. I haven't hooked it up in years. It did work pretty well to block out of band stations. Especially on little portables that didn't have a really good front end.

Might help with local ultra shortwave transmitters that appear in multiple places on the band if I move the antenna from vertical.

I have not yet had the opportunity to test a preselector on any of my radios, as I often find myself engaged in the search for stations using the built-in automatic tuning feature. However, I would be interested in exploring the possibility of utilising a preselector on a software-defined radio.
