Roland TD1KPX? Or TD11K?

I recently got a question asking which is better: The Roland TD1kpx? Or the TD11k?

So there’s this little known drumset line from roland called the TD1kpx. There are two versions of this kit that are out right now. The Roland TD1KPX and the Roland TD1KPX2. If you’re wondering about the difference between these two, the newer version has an upgraded kick pad, that's pretty much it. It can accommodate a double kick pedal. What really stands out is the price! The TD1KPX2 costs $1400!!

TD1KPX2 ($1400)
3x PDX6 (6.5 inches)
1x PDX8 (8 inches)
3x CY5 Dual zone Cymbals (10 inches)
FD9 Hihat ($160)
Kits: 15
Outputs: headphone jack
Inputs: 9

TD11K $800
Pads: 1 x PDX-8 (Snare), 3 x PD-8A (Toms)
Included Kick Pads: KD-9
Cymbal Pads: 2xCY-8 1xCY-5
Number of Drum Kits: 50
Inputs: 10
Outputs: R/L Headphone

TD11KV $1400
Pads: 2 x PDX-8 (Snare, Tom 3), 2 x PDX-6 (Tom 1, Tom 2)
Cymbal Pads:1 x CY-12C (Crash), 1 x CY-13R (Ride). 1 x CY-5
Number of Drum Kits: 50
Inputs: 10
Outputs: R/L Headphone

TD4KP ($700)
7.5 Rubber Pads no rimshot :(
CY5 Cymbals (10”)
TD4 Module
25 Kits
Outputs: R/L Headphone

Thanks for this video. These model nuances make choosing so difficult. I thought I had figured it out until I hit the comments.

Hi Justin,
Does the TD1KPX2 Kick pad support double pedal *perfectly* ? Or will it missing beats while playing faster??
Or is the TD17's kick pad better suited for Dual Pedals?
~ thanks

Did I miss it? Does the TD-1KPX2 snare pad sport dual zones? I sort of assume the toms don't, even though they're mesh toms?

Hey Justin, I had to make the same decision for my first e-kit after being away from drums for 30+years. I found a TD1KPX for $999 CDN and at that price it's a slam dunk. The mesh heads at under a grand ($780 US ish) make this an easy choice. The rack is limited in setup options especially the hi hat. If played too aggressively the cymbal stand arms will rotate around; very annoying. Last nit-pick is the bass trigger. The KPX1's placement is quite low and doesn't allow full mallet extension on your pedal so you have to choke up the beater length a fair bit, losing the momentum of the pedal. I'm using a Gibraltar 9711GS pedal and had to choke the mallet buy 2". The newer KPX2 has a higher placement of the bass triggers and a hi hat extension rod to elevate the cymbal; subtle but important differences in playability. The trick will be to find the KPX2 at the "under a grand" price point which is its appropriate value IMO.

Awesome videos, thanks for the info. Wondering if you can help me with something...I've purchased a TD1kpx, I plan on using it with Superior Drummer, so went with the all mesh and portability and sacrificed on the module...but i'm wondering if some of Roland's higher end triggers work as planned with this...for example, buying a CY-13R, which has the three zones...would I be able to plug this in to the TD1KPX module and still get all three zones and the same sensitivity, etc, or would I need a higher end module to take advantage of it? Haven't been able to find any clear info on this!

65 drums Thanks for this video. I just did some searching today and found Roland has a new lineup called TD-17, which among other things offers the option to use your own samples with an SD card, though I have yet to find a manual or any detailed description of the specifications on the module. Any thoughts on the TD--17 models? Basically, my wish list is something that has as close a feel as possible to an acoustic kit but is quiet enough for a small apt., lets you use your own samples, lets you use a double kick pedal, and is as compact and light as possible for those requirements. Purposes would be primarily practice and secondarily recording. But I've never seriously looked into electronic kits before, because it was never necessary, so I'm not sure what the options for creating a setup like that are--one of these new kits, or the TD-1KPX2 with the module replaced by a TD-17 module, or some other kit or mishmash I'm not even aware of?

Hey Justin.. I recently bought my 1st e-kit the Roland TD-1 kpx... the prob I’m facing is that on most kits the volume of the bass drum is very very low n can’t hear beyond the actual sound emanating from kicking the pad... any solutions?

I recently made my own version of this KPX drum kit with all pads and parts I already own. I copied the Roland’s rack design and I used 1 pdx-6 tom then 3 pdx-8 for snare, 2nd rack, floor tom. Cy-5 hi-hat, fd-9 hi hat controller pedal. KT-10 kick trigger pedal(looking for a kT-9 kick pedal that’s not as heavy)Cy-8 crash and cy-8 for ride. I’m currently looking for a cy-12 crash/ride cymbal so I can have full 3 way ride triggering with my td-17 module. I’m going to guitar center to buy the Gibraltar rack pipe adapter so my cymbals can be inside the rack poles like the Roland kit. I’m very happy with my creation. When it’s finished it’s going to be a fantastic mini travel kit.

Hi Justin! Would you care giving your thoughts on the Millenium MPS-750? Looking to buy my first drumset ever, and this looks pretty sweet. Four dual zone mesh pads, kickdrum tower including pedal, two zone cymbals plus three zone ride etc. All for EUR 499, or EUR 619 with hihat on stand at Thomann. The module might not be that great, but do you have any ideas about the hardware?

The new TD-1 DMK seems like great value for an entry kit. Appreciate your insights man!

Hey Justin,

I saw the video on the drum-tec pro mesh heads. How do you like them so far? Is there going to be an in-depth-review or something?

Hey Justin, do I have to worry about the temperature in the room where I store my drums? Here in Sweden its cold 12 months a year and I have my Alesis Command standing In a cold garage, the colder days the temperature goes below 50.

Thank you for all the help in your videos!
