Víkingur Ólafsson – Debussy: La fille aux cheveux de lin, Preludes Op.1, No.8

The prelude's central idea takes after its title – a girl with golden hair, which in the fine art symbolizes innocence and naivety. This voyage of musical discovery introduced Ólafsson to the immaculate blend of “freedom and discipline” in Debussy’s piano writing. “As extraordinary innovators of both harmony and form, with a unique ear for colour and a keen sense of the theatrical, both composers, Debussy and Rameau, wrote music which engages more senses than just the hearing”, he observes. “And both enjoyed giving their compositions titles that stimulate the imagination – the music itself ranging from the purely programmatic to the entirely abstract. As in previous albums, however, I have left the music itself guide me, rather than a fixed ideology.” Watch pianist Víkingur Ólafsson (“Artist of the Year” at the Gramophone Awards 2019) perform Debussy's 'La fille aux cheveux de lin'.

Debussy's inspiration for the piece was a poem by the same name by Leconte de Lisle. Do you think there is a connection between the poem and the piano piece?

Omg his tone! So beautiful 💕
The lighting was a little bit distracting to me though... 💧

the prelude was inspired by images from the childhood of the composer and the nostalgia to the time of innocence and simplicity.the metaphoric implication of the soft-silky flaxen hair aimed to depicting how love could be in a world lacking obstacles and barriers.hence the music came in such an easy flow of chords .

This music feels like watching people spending time on the promenade in autumn. Dunno why. It's beautiful tho.

One of the greatest pianists alive. I like his Debussy even more than his Bach. Good taste, no mannerisms or romanticisms, no jumping up and down on the piano bench and making silly grimaces like so many other pianists do. There's the "clarté française" Debussy (and Ravel) wanted to.
In my opinion the best Debussy since Michelangeli.

OMG so beautiful! With his characteristic stillness, super sensitive tone and the surreal, impressionistic lighting (which I think was a distraction for performers but he seemed ok for that), I was totally immersed in this incredible two-and-a-half-minute fantasy!

Apart from his amazing talent he doesn't resemble a refugee from a boy-band as so many of these young male pianists and singers do.

His wonderful performance is felt the scent of Debussy‘s aesthetics

He holds an unchallenged position as s an interpreter of Debussy

1:21👍 ; 現在突然學起魔術方塊, 要照本宣科簡單地多, 但那看似複雜的解法, 是怎麼想出來的呢?就好像作曲家是如何抓到物體、萬物的規律呢?

the interpretation was somewhat histerical, but it's obvious the interpreter has put effort into it so im sure many people will like it
