We put the seat as far front as possible, multi pal reasons. First, less weight is harder because of the strength curve.Second, we would like people to bottom out the machine before they reach full extension to keep the muscles under load so they can not rest in the extended position.Third, one can reach a deeper range of motion in the flexed position without the machine resting. As for the knee locking out, there really isn't much danger when one locks the knee, unless they can hyperextend.

i never understood why it does not seem to be explained more clearly to trainees, that locking out the knees is really not so joint is under control of the contracted muscles. IF the trainee is not intensely contracting the quads, THEN the knee joint structures are in danger of stress and uneven ballistic forces. All the trainer really needs to do is present in a coherent way, the problem of sloppyness of an UNcontracted leg that has machine weight "resting" on the knee.
