I am actually impressed that someone figured out a way to make joint out of 4 pieces of thick timber, and somehow end up with 80% of the load being supported by just the shear strength of wood glue.

There seems to be a lot of people who don’t think this is a strong joint. I would think it has the same strength as any rafter would have laying on a ridge pole. I think it’s a bit extraneous, but the rafters aren’t going anywhere as long and the seats are anchored and the uprights are supporting themselves. I don’t see the purpose, but I don’t see a huge liability either.
