Fix a crack in a solid wood table top

Cracks are going to happen in your furniture and it's important to know how to fix them when they appear. The best way is to use bowties to prevent the crack from spreading. Much like a dovetail, a bowtie is a mechanical joint that uses the joint's geometry to prevent the wood from cracking any further.

This was a great explanation! I'm trying to save a split solid oak top on an antique buffet that I'm refinishing. Hoping to get the courage to try this method!

This looks more intimidating and challenging than it is. The router cut helps you chisel squarely, and the tape is great for marking. I would set up a wedge to divert the little blocks that you've already cut away from the back of the blade (4:05), probably move the fence further away too. Eventually one of those blocks will dance into the rear blade teeth and come back at you.

Love how the bow ties look on this project. And at the 5:55 mark, I really love the subtle sheen of the Tried and True varnish oil. Did you buff it out or is that just as is once dried?

Hey Morgan. Do you know why it cracked? I watched the video where you made the table and it looks like you did everything right to allow the wood to expand and contract without issues. I'm new to wood working and been deeply researching how to make a table that keeps this kind of movement in mind. Thus, I'm so confused on why your table cracked even after you did everything correctly.

Great video! Random question: how do you like the Sawstop (it looks like the contractor model)? Any regrets or upgrades you wish you made?

Interesting method but also the worst looking thing I’ve ever looked at in my life. I would probably cut in half and replace the boards entirely before doing that.
