Who else has played in a band where the guitarist doesn't use a tuner cos "he can tune by ear"... and then waited 45 minutes for him to still be outta tune?

I remember my first pedal was a Behringer TS-800, still use it 2 years later and it sounds great for punk

Top 5 imo is 1. Tuner 2. EQ, 3. Preamp/boost, 4. Buffer if needed because some pedals have buffers installed like the boss line up if not any desired effects pedal delay, chorus, wah, flange,
Distortion. 5. Tho not essential a loop pedal like the rc1 or rc5 can help you practice a lot

3 Essentials: GE-7, Delay (best with modulation options), wide-range dostortion like RAT. With GE-7 you are able to simulate different types of sounds and use it as a booster. With delay, you can make slight slap-back for old school rock, huge solo sounds, ambiance, simulate chorus or reverb. I'd recommend Carbon Copy or EHX Deluxe Memory Man Nano. RAT is the best rated distortion for a reason - it suits a lot of styles and can do lighter to really heavy or fuzzy sounds, with EQ you are good to go.

Oh you can go wrong with a tuning pedal. Mine has LEDs so bright they lead to 2nd degree burns on your retina.

A 7-band EQ pedal should be the first one you get.

Is a noise suppressor the same thing as a noise gate? If not, what is the difference and when should I use one over the other?

In terms of effect pedals go big or go home. If there is a "super" or "turbo" version choose this and leave the standard pedal alone. You can always reduce levels, but you cannot push the pedal beyond its limits.

Dont use boss pedals they are tone killers and not true bypass .
