"To develop a complete mind: Study the science of art; Study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else." -Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci is a great example of where art and science mix, he was a wonderful artist (in my opinion) and was an amazing inventor.

Art asks questions; Science answers questions.

The real opposites are sports and art. In that case, art wins, obviously >:)

I am currently working as an Illustrator and Writer but have a background in the natural sciences and I find it very interesting that lots of my artsy-fartsy coworkers in the art industry (I'm talking digital illustrations, concept art, fine arts and so on not (post-)modern art) are extremely interested and invested in natural science. They often learn on their own time and are at least decently literate when it comes to science.
For everyone working in the industry science is not only a huge topic of discussion and genreal interest but also a tool of the trade, especially when it comes to physics and biology (light/colour environment, behaviour of materials, Anatomy ...). Someone who is not willing to learn about such things most likely is not able to suceed in the industry because you need to know your basics and those more often than not are based in the natural sciences. So it's not that astonishing that the art industry draws people in who do have an interest in science because it's a huge part of the job. One that you cannot possibly skip on if you want to be good enough to get good work.
Now, modern art as well as all the many variations of it is another chapter. Artists who do not atempt realism or styles that are derived from realism aren't really forced to study science. I cannot say much about this part of the art world since I'm not part of it but it seems - to me at least - that this might be the famous "emotional" part of art that is known to the public. My very personal experiences do agree with the sterotype that this kind of artist is a little detatched from the scientific world and more focussed on their inner workings and feelings - to which I for one cannot relate to.
And that translates well to the public, creating the impression that art and science are two opposite things. They can be but science can or rather must also be an integral part of art, depending on which branch of the business you're looking at.

I think that every physical object in a room is a combination of art and math.

I do think that artists are scientists, really. We must learn so many aspects of science in order to achieve beautiful art ( i.e Physics for folds and perspective, biology and anatomy ect... )

I love this video because I really hate the barrier that is being put between art and science. Being someone who loves to draw, is a musician, admires art, likes to read/write, is interested in science, and just curious in general, I hate the boundary. I just found out about the stereotype of art and science being opposites recently, and I totally disagree. Anyone can be interested in both subjects, and it is okay if they are.

I'm studying to be a biologist but have done art my whole life (photography, digital, drawing, writing) and succeeded in every medium I've tried. My art teacher in college assumed I was an art major and was shocked when I told her my passion was biology and wildlife conservation. For me they are not two separate things but interconnected. My life would be so much lesser if I was forced to never participate in one or the other ever again.
