Watching this game come out was like hearing a good friend was coming back in town.

Then it turns out that friend's just been doing a lot of hard drugs.

Tony Hawk is the reason Vans are still around. When he was just getting started in the 1980s, he found that the flat, treaded sole was perfect for gripping a skateboard. He spread the word, and now they're the standard in skateboarding.

Shane and Adam being "RADICAL" on skateboards is priceless

The most entertaining thing about this game is the ragdoll physics making the wipeouts look as painful as possible.

My friend was so excited for this game, I went over to his house so we could play it since I watched him play tony hawk when we were kids. He was really pissed when it turned out to be a hollow shell of it’s predecessors

I'm amazed you didn't mention the fact that that Day 1 patch contains the entire game aside from the tutorial.

This makes Razor Freestyle Scooter look like a masterpiece

Man that was an old episode

I like how in the “Berrics” they removed all the interesting wall art in the real original location and replaced it with bad advertisements.
Just
Brilliant level design

Ah, I remember when this dropped back in 2015. This game is the definition of "we're losing the license soon, so let's pump out one more game quick." Quite a sad end to an iconic series.

Also, fun fact, Pro Skater I wasn't Tony Hawks' official video game debut. His first involvement with video games was in the unreleased Duelin' Fireman, which was made by members of the Church of The Subgenius

You forgot to mention that the board slam was mapped to the same button as the grind, so a lot of times you would try to do a grind to keep a combo going and you would boardslam instead to kill it.

I actually lost it at the Shake Shack bit

"He mastered the art of riding a wooden plank with wheels nailed under it". That's pure gold.
This is top quality writing. That's why I love this channel so much.

You know if Activision wanted to cash in on Tony Hawk before the license expired, just having a collection of previous games (Though modified to remove the music they couldn’t get the rights to) would’ve been better tbh.

Not even a minute in, and I'm laughing my ass off at Tony Hawk killing Morphman.

I love the show, it simultaneously teaches aspiring game programmers what NOT to do while being HELLA entertaining, it’s also a huge blast from the past, a whole gaming documentary.

That Morphman callback in the beginning is just wonderful. You already got me laughing and pressing Like a minute into the video.
That "Asteroid Belt" level though. How do you make a SPACE level boring? That's an achievement.
The game scolding you for going out of bounds is just so in-your-face. No idea why anyone thought that was a good idea.
I was never into skateboarding, but because I grew up in southern California, Tony Hawk was literally *THE* first celebrity I ever heard of, and my parents even bought me Tony Hawk merchandise when I was 4 and didn't know a THING about him or skateboarding (and yes, that was in 1999.)
Interesting how the quality of the games tapered off as general interest in skateboarding decreased, but then as skateboarding got added to the Olympics in 2020, BOOM. Good game again.

Man I was just depressed when I saw this thumbnail.
But on the plus side we got the really damn good THPS 1+2 remake a few years later, so at least this story has a happy(ish) ending.

14:00 The final level of THUG2, Skatopia, is probably the best real-life location turned into a game level, it's so chaotic and done right. It was visited in the show Viva La Bam and a few other MTV specials I think. Edit: The THUG multiplayer, especially on PC were so amazing. It wasn't really a competitive multiplayer, rather you'd just chat and hang out with people while doing giant combos around the city. We'd all know how to make an infinite skating line and we'd just have fun with each other, we'd get scores in the hundreds of millions just for fun, no terrible progression system just having fun.

The first level is "the berrics". It's a legendary skate location/company in which eric koston is involved. It is modeled after the real thing. Most skaters would kill to skate that place. It is done exactly the way it should be done. Probably just not a good decision to make it the first level. Should have been a bonus location for real skaters to experience after they're done with the main game.

“Maybe Activision was at fault.”

Ho ho, you two have no idea how much of an understatement that is.
