My brother, dad and myself drove a 79 series on our trip in Gambella Ethiopia. We had the wagon version with 8 of us all in this 79 series. That amazing vehicle took us up mountains where construction equipment broke down and we spent a 13hour day driving back to town. I'm totally sold on one

They way they build their trucks are awesome. The TLC is unreal. Wish we could get them in the USA

Watta sic review Justin, unbiased with no prejudice, hard to pull that off on a land cruiser.

Oh wow guys... instantly one of my fav vehicles you’ve had here... I’d instantly jump on that if they sold it here in the states. TOP NOTCH!

70 series came out in 1985, I had an 1985 bundera, coil sprung short wheel base, with the 22r 2.4ltr 4cyl motor. It was awesome. I have a love of Toyota trucks, would hand over both kids for a 79 tomorrow, even with all the flaws in it 😆

Great review Jason. I am happy that at least one person will review a 79 series honestly (without religious fervour!). I have owned all types of 4WD for my business, working out of Alice Springs and Darwin. They all have positives and negatives. My 79 series had all the flaws you mentioned, noise, 5th gear set too low for highway touring and fuel economy. However, it was tough, and carry huge amounts of gear. My next 4WD will be another 79 series.

If someone gets only 50, 000 kms from a clutch they need to have a driving lesson. If they get 5, 000 kms they need an auto. I have driven many 79's and 78's at work, at mines and outback Australia and normally the clutch gets replaced at between 150, 000 and 180, 000. Using a clutch correctly is a skill worth learning. Clutch wear issues may occur with engine mods and higher horsepower ( I have never done engine mods), but as Justin says, the 79 is not a race car. Reliability is the most important thing.

Same with our 75s. They came before the 79 and we totally get more bragging rights ...

J70 started in 1984. 1999: The pick-up version of the J70 was designated the 79 series. too bad they are not sold in the US.

The 79 series did not come around until in the 1970s. The 70 series in general was not introduced until the mid 1980s.

Is the "Ute" used by offroaders or campers? that would be interesting subject.

Amazing vehicle. Once you replace the front springs, the rear springs, the clutch, the interior, the seats, extend the frame, widen the rear axle, install an air intake, exhaust, and chip the engine.
Other than Amazing vehicle. 😒

Clay, who do I have to talk to about a PCOR bed system and canopy is the USA.
I live in Canada and I just bought a 2018 Tundra SR5.

The 79 series are like the ford super duties in Australia .

I'm glad they have shitty rear axles because I'm throwing it out and putting in portal axles in mine.

Personal opinion 79 series are great, but a bit overrated. I'll stick with my 2015 2.7l ecoboost fx4 super crew. All the power, all the fuel economy, and all the room.
