Participatory action research is an innovative collaborative research method that includes the groups that are being studied. In this video, Shira Hassan of the Young Women’s Empowerment Project, a community-based, youth-led project that was founded in 2001, discusses the use of participatory action research in the project’s recent report, “Girls Do What They Have To Do To Survive.”

The Vera Institute of Justice is a nonprofit that has worked for more than five decades to transform justice systems. Vera produces ideas, analysis and research that inspire change in the systems people rely upon for safety and justice, and works in close partnership with government and civic leaders to implement it.

What a perfect description of PAR! Well done Shirah. I will be quoting much of the first two minutes of this in my thesis.

TY,

I totally agree. I just recently learned this terminology from Reading & Researching. I never knew the terms before, but have done much volunteer work doing these types of things.

Yes, CBPR is very effective & similar to the socioecological approach & logic model, which I really like & appreciate. But Definitely 😁 produces real time results & effective continuous evaluation & course corrections are easier influenced & changes can impact social changes

& Definitely allow for community leverage by training community members skills to lead & mentor, so they can reach their own peers & definitely more effective in reaching more people than just academic research.

That is awesome that the youth were empowered to feel like they have a voice, can work together & display their leadership skills & use their strengths & use their past experiences & traumas to work together towards policy changes & solutions. That's what it's all about. Collaborative efforts, Everyone uses their strengths to help make realistic goals & work towards consistent progress & change & build long-term supportive relationships.

Healthy built communities are MADE through proper strategies. -Dr. Kimberly Brodie

One day, one action, & consistency over time.

Yeah Yeah Yeah E YEAH 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

Thanks for sharing real life experiences of how this works.

Sheerah Hassan,
I enjoyed your description of Participatory Research Action (PAR). I really appreciated your explanation as it helped me understand this method a bit more. I am a graduate student at Arizona State University (ASU). I am currently taking a course on research and evaluation. I was curious to know what resources can you point me towards to begin using PAR when finding strategies to improve writing skills?

Thank you for your time,
