I was mesmerized when I first heard Daytripper at age 10. Drove Mom crazy. I played it for hours. Over and over non stop. I later learned it on bass and played it several different ways. But never this way. Thanks. One of my favorite songs

One of the best and most iconic riffs in Rock and Roll

Nice to know ive been playing it right all these years. I rhink perhaps its because the first bass I played was a Hofner copy and tonally once you hear it, there is no mistaking where it needs to be played on the neck to sound like Paul.

If you listen to the original Beatles version of “Day Tripper”, you can hear that Macca actually plays both ways. He might only play at the top of the fingerboard at the end, but he does play it there.

I was in fourth grade when Day Tripper came out, and I had that song so into my head, the teacher yelled at me to stop dancing and sit back down at my desk! Good times, good times.

Love it when the Ric’s are being used 🎸

I had a teacher in highschool who knew the correct lines, so anytime a Beatles song came around I got a lesson on the spot 😂

Guitar/Bass nerds have to be some of the best. They're so nerdy but so great in their playing. I love when they seem to be humbled by their own playing. I only wish I could play 10% as good as they do.

Viola basses are very unique. If you play them like a conventional bass on the lower frets they are kinda dead sounding, but if you stay higher up the neck and play an octave up they have a really good acoustic type quality that fits nicely into a mix.

I’ve always played up on the E string octave, using the E, A and D strings
I think that is where it “sounds” the best to me

There’s videos of him with the Beatles and with other later line ups playing it both ways. High register in the first part of the song usually the lower register the later swapping between both sometimes through the song. I guess whatever and whoever he’s playing with. Either way the best bass riff of all time.

That's the beauty of playing bass though, it's always up for interpretation.
There are usually multiple ways to play any given song, and yes, there is one "correct" way, being the way that the original artist plays it.
That doesn't mean it's the only correct way to play it, if you get what I mean.
I'm glad you were able to learn something, even after all these years!
Tis the beauty of life. 😊

I've always played it the first way, too. I think I learned it that way because I saw George play it that way.

In the past few years we have shown just how good a backline Paul and Ringo really were/are.

One of the first "Rock riffs" in music was 75% of The Beatles success. As a guitar player and teacher myself I lov having the ability to watch the artist live to see how/where THEY play it to finally get it RIGHT

You can play the flat 3rd into the major 3rd on the low E, too, but of course you know that. The difference is that Paul played the lick an octave above low E.

That's right, Paul plays it higher on the neck, & so does Billy!!
