if f(x) is continuous on close interval [a b], what is the need of step 2 ?

Your approach wrong... From your definition, the intervals are closed but in example interval is open...

Sir Sin(1/x) for limit x tends to zero is finite. So option ( b) is also correct

Definition is valid for closed interval but in the problem the interval is given is open.... please make it clear first
