Are the UN Sustainable Development Goals a SCAM?!

Recently, two interesting pieces were published that are quite sobering or in some cases even extremely critical of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In this video I explore if there are merits to these critiques.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals are not a "scam, " but there is nothing in them that goes far enough to make the plan for civilization truly sustainable (nor do they go far enough to fix global inequality). Thus, the SDGs are undersized and don't face up to the severity of the crises we face. Because of the political pressures they face, and the enormous pressure for both corporations and nations to continue "business as usual, " we cannot expect our "leaders" to acknowledge the true nature of the crises we face nor the metamorphosis of society needed to handle them reasonably well. (I say "handle them" not "solve them" because there is no solution that would allow us to continue modern civilization as it is.

To prevent worsening ecological and societal breakdown, we must shrink the size of the global economy by about 50% to bring our ecological footprint within the limits of Earth's sustainable carrying capacity. To do that, we must shift to more localized, circular, non-capitalist, and less industrialized economies, and thousands of life-harming products must be banned, dramatically reduced in production, or replaced with more natural alternatives. Some things we produce now we must simply stop producing, and we must focus on meeting the basic needs of 8 billion people and millions of species in a fair and sustainable way.

I’ve been watching your videos, trying to understand why so many schools, businesses, and entire countries are so willing to throw aside their national sovereignty in order to fallow Agenda 2030. Prior to 2020 I tended to tune out when I heard the word sustainability, but over the course of the past two and a half years I’ve been forced to explore the SDG because every problem that pops up (whether intended or not) seems to be linked to one of these 17 sustainability goals. But my greater concern is whether the United Notions is even fit to be the torchbearer for developing such goals. Take for example the UN Human Rights Council.

To be frank the UN Human Rights Council it’s a complete joke. For example countries like Mauritania, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan all have prison sentences to death penalties for the crime of homosexuality. Russia and the Ukraine both had seats on the UNHRC when Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia remained on the HRC a month and a half fallowing their invasion before being removed on April 7! The countries on the HRC can’t even get along! Then there is the Peoples Republic of China. The PRC has been aloud to remain on the UN Human Rights Council even after they broke their agreement with Hong Kong for 50 years of autonomy. Even worse the PRC is allowed to stay on the HRC despite public knowledge, reports, and personal testimonials of genocide of the Uighur’s population in Xinjiang, as well as their organ harvesting program of those who practice unapproved religions like Falun Gong. Then there is the debt diplomacy known as the Belt and Road Initiative as well as their constant threats to invade Taiwan. What’s even more alarming is even after Xi Jinping said, "The Chinese people will never be bullied, oppressed, or enslaved.  Anyone who dares to try, will find their heads bashed bloody against a great wall of steel forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese people" the PRC continued to sit on the UNHRC. Its clear the UN is not even qualified to oversee human rights much less set moral, environmental, and economic standards for the rest of the world to fallow.

Hello Kali,
Thanks for you videos. I just stumbled on your video. Somewhere deep in my heart, I wanted to work for UN. I was short listed and had an interview too in WFP, New Delhi office. But couldn’t not crack it, finally. It was long back. I still want to work for UN. Your videos are great. You inspired me. Thank you.
