I believe what it is is “R&R” with rhotic Rs (pronouncing the Rs the way an American would) sounds like the way people hear us say “oh naur”. And as a side note, it’s really interesting linguistically the reason that Americans hear a hard R sound! It’s something about americanisation of the world, lazy talking, and the shapes of our mouths. A rhotic “R” is made the same way an “O” is made - just more wide open at the sides. Your tongue does almost the same movement for both sounds. So to the American ear, it sounds like an R sound. Something like that, I can’t quite remember what it is but it’s really interesting!

Ooh this comment helped me, an American phonologist who struggles with triphthongs, figure out how to fix my Aussie triphthong pronunciation and get much closer to an accurate realization. I'll save the detailed rambling about nasalization and backness 😅

among other problems "R" isn't pronounced like "or"
