Microsoft Flight Sim 2024 - This Should be Unacceptable

The Microsoft Flight Sim 2024 Launch is one of the worst launches I have experienced , in this video we talk about what I think the underlying issues are what the main issue with 2020 was and how I think asobo might have mistaken the core complaint about MSFS2020 content delivery

And how some specific design changes would likely make things a much better experience for players and how this is not just an issue for MSFS but many modern games that can't decide to what degree they are cloud or client based.

As a (now retired) software developer I’ve seen this so many times. You tell management that to make the product successful you must do this, this and this. You get told 'no, that’s too expensive, just do one of the things you said and it’ll be fine'. So you do your best and it falls on its arse and then to fix it you spend way more than you would have done if you had been allowed to do all the things you said were necessary. And in the meantime you’ve pissed your customers off, so it’s lose, lose.

Steam tells me I've played for 4 hours.
Does looking at a Loading Screen pass as playing?

i tried it today and it felt as if i was at an actual airport. check in 2 hours before boarding. flight delayed. flight delayed again. flight cancelled.

What's pissing me off the most is during that loading screen which ultimately stops at 97%, it's putting your PC to max load, so it's sitting pulling 400W+ of extra electricity for me over and above normal draw. So I'm getting billed extra energy consumption for something which is bugged out.

When you load in, you should also have the option to pre-load a 1000km radius around you... all of it. Everything.

With millions trying to download, this is essentially nothing more than a gigantic DDOS attack.

I've been a software development project manager for more than 20 years. Pretty sure if this was my launch I'd be fired.

Hello,

I am a software developer with one of the leading third-party companies that create add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Unfortunately, during yesterday's launch, everything that could go wrong did. It was a huge disappointment, as I was unable to debug the products now available in the simulator. Instead, I spent 10 hours stuck on a grey loading screen.

I hope to see some improvements when I launch the simulator today; I'm just about to boot it up.

I enjoyed this video — keep up the great work!

Spot on fellah. I worked in IT for 42 years and been working with computers since the Sinclair ZX81. The problem is the fantastic development in game/simulation fidelity has not been matched by the 'make sure it works' fidelity! Thank you for this emminantly sensible video!

Shitty dysfunctional broken game launches and user experiences should never be considered the acceptable norm. The problem is, gamers have routinely allowed game developers to get away with overcharging for games that are effectively in a beta development stage at best when they are released to the public. If you want to call it a beta launch, then I could see gamers excepting that as a standard, some things will not work correctly, user experiences will be buggy or intermittent etc. But when you market your game as being ready for launch to the public, it should work almost flawlessly and seamlessly. I bought the aviator edition which is a $200 USD purchase. I spent well over an hour yesterday in a queue that had no method to exit before the game would even begin to load because of the saturated servers. Then, when the game finally did start to load, it got about a third of the way through, which took another 20 minutes, before kicking me from the server and giving me a server error. This is completely unacceptable when you have paid $200 for a product it should work perfectly.

I do agree with everything you say.
Started my career as a game developer, before moving to film, I feel like I do have a bit of insight into the business side of things

sad true is, games are so much more complicated than they used to be ( like you say yourself ), it takes so much longer to do it, you also cannot start with 5 plates, people expect 30 or even a 100

none of this does give you excuses for bad design, but again as you mentioned, the multiplatform could play a role into some of the decisions they made

Diablo4 - which is always been advertised as full online, had a very similar issues at launch, lot of people very disappointed as well. You got a loading screen when it said " servers are under high load, expect a long time to get into the game " ( funny enough, almost exactly same thing what MSFS did )

and another said thruth is, that these days, I think there is a certain amount of " if we lose this many people at launch becasue of launch day problems, it's ok " counted into the decissions of launching titles, vs delaying them

back in the game, when most people experienced games on Arcade machines, you didn't have the luxury that the product had to work, otherwise you get no money from it, but if people "pre-paid" their play time, and you could update the game over the non-existing internet, I think companies would do the same as they do today

Microsoft Loading Screen Simulator 2024.

I agree with every word that you’ve said there. 2020 was terrible for the whole download fiasco. And 2024, as you say, neither really playable offline in any meaningful way, and the online mode is (currently) unplayable. It’s a mess. And a foreseeable one at that. Especially for a company the size of Microsoft, and with the vast resources that they have. They should’ve anticipated this WAY ahead of time. Give me a Megadrive, a cartridge and no internet. Cheers!

I think the state of game launches recently isn't an excuse for Microsoft, it's an indictment of the state of the video game industry at present.
