Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric: In-depth Review

The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric AWD is pretty much everything you'd expect a Volvo full-EV model to be. This fashionable battery-powered compact premium SUV features a state-of-the-art fully-electric all-wheel-drive powertrain that offers a WLTP-rated range of up to 260 miles on a single charge and an output of 408hp. The drawback is premium pricing but otherwise, a lot of boxes seem to have been ticked here.

I was initially gutted that this was my option rather than a tesla for my company car. But I think that other than long journeys it's actually more practical for me.

Great review, very comprehensive. Coming to this 9 months on, I noticed that you mentioned a leather option was available on the top model. Sadly, no longer - Volvo insist that their customers must have recycled plastic bottles or other ‘animal free’ options covering their interiors. Personally, I think they’ve got a bloody cheek to dictate what their CUSTOMERS should buy, especially as leather can still be specified on phev models.

Great car in so many respects. But the front grill? Makes you go looking for a lawn bowls club hat. Just destroys the otherwise sleek lines of a beautiful car.

I question your ‘maintain value’, especially in Australia. The entire 022 XC40 P8 AWD has been accounted for (I am getting one 🙃). The FWD will be the ‘go to’ for those who want city driving as their main activity. I went AWD, because I honestly expect Volvo to simply stop making the XC40 P8 AWD, instead pushing the single motor version. The AWD will become a prized, much sought after vehicle.

I am no expert, but please, humour me, in 18-24mths, are Volvo still releasing the AWD, or pushing the FWD. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
