Why Superhero Names Are Difficult

Choosing your superhero identity can be tough, but sometimes you just need to shrug, call yourself Squirrel Girl, and hope for the best.

Luke Cage, Blade, Bronze Tiger, Green Lantern, Cyborg, Static, Spawn, Falcon, Khaldur'am, Storm, Bishop, Spike, Nubia, and Gentle are all black people that don't have black in their names. Many of them would sound stupid if they added that (in the case of Green Lantern, he would be something else entirely). Black Panther is a title that is held for the monarch of Wakanda, technically if you were able to take over the nation and become king you would be the Black Panther regardless of ethnicity.

The reason so many black heroes have "black" in their name is the same reason so many female heroes have "lady" or "girl" in their names.
1. for a long time all heroes were white men, so when they started writing more diverse characters they wanted to emphasize the change
or
2. The writers were white men who thought adding race or gender was all the work they needed to do.

I don't think it's racist to have 'White' in your name. But it's unnecessary because it describes a superfluous aspect of the hero. Thematic something like a superhero named after a fictional thing that already exists? White Rabbit? Fine. That's thematic. It tells you more about something in relation to what you are. The White Rabbit was known as fast and hard to catch. A speedster or someone who can give the slip, perhaps. I never knew Black Panther was a black man for a while. But black panthers actually exist so the thematics of the name meant more to me. What the fuck does 'White Blast Man' do? You're not a fucking digimon okay you're not the alternate Ice-themed version of Blast Man. If the problem was the name 'Blast Man' then adding more stupid onto your ice cream sundae of stupid doesn't cancel out to become good.

alright, look, unlike the video, I will not beat around the bush. It's very simple. The reason it's hard to come up with a good name is simply because most of the good ones are already taken

The hard part about making a superhero name is that many of the good words that can be used as superhero names (Nova, Nebula, Livewire, Firestorm, Cyclone...) are already taken.
