You need to turn _off_ the PD switch on the usb meter, in order to allow the soldering iron to negotiate the higher voltage over USB-C.

USB-A provides 5v always, before negotiation, so the USB meter is able to turn on even with no actual device. USB-C provides nothing before negotiation, so you need the PD switch on the meter to choose between the meter negotiating, or the actual device negotiating. The PD switch needs to be on for the meter to turn on without a device negotiating, and also to probe protocols and trigger higher voltages manually ...

Those framed disassembled electronics are a neat idea. When I was in grad school I took apart my old laptop and had all of the parts mounted on a board on my wall. Except it was all still connected together and actually worked.

Hey Dave!
It’s a „young generation only“ multimeter:
Loading every day
auto mode
and finally the buzzer which can only be heard by <40

I love how in this modern age of ChatGPT they still can't quite get the English right. God bless them.

That multimeter compared to the USB analyzer makes one wonder why they don't just make a multimeter using the hardware from the USB analyzer. For a few dollars more, the USB analyzer seems to have much more capability, including a basic o-scope - the multimeter is landfill-fodder even before it ships to customers. Anyhow, thanks for the mailbag, always interesting!
p.s.: Maybe you could make one of those Grid Studios teardowns of your Micro-Current or the Brymen meter? That would be cool! Cheers!!

The PCB adapters for lab equipement are looking great. I've designed an adapter by myself after I've seen some on your channel. It is a small but tremendous improvement.

We used to have artwork like that of our own products in various production states in the floors. Got replaced by generic company BS artwork at some point (no rowing boats yet fortunately). I guess someone got cold feet that visitors might get inspired.

I use only right-angle probe connectors these days. They just better protect the meter when it gets dropped. I actually like that multi-meter's form factor. It's thin enough to fit in a shirt pocket, and the display is large enough for me to read without my glasses. As for it only running for 20 hours, most such meters shut off after 5 minutes or so anyway, and 20 hours of actual use would cover a week or 2 for almost any tech. I personally no longer spend 8 hours a day beeping out cables. Also, unlike with other multi-meters I wouldn't have to pull off the cover and change the batteries. That's a job that gets irritating, and 9 Volt batteries are getting fairly expensive for what they are, and I'm tired of digging through my accessories drawer to find batteries, since they always die right when I need them most. It seems that for every negative with this meter there is a positive, at least for me. Different people, different combinations of applications and needs. It also looked like the frequency meter works up to 1 MHz, likely for logic-level square waves anyway. So I think I'll contemplate getting one, especially at that price, since none of my old Flukes fit in my shirt pocket or recharge off my laptop or my little USB battery pack.

The USB tester needs to be powered via microUSB while you do the power delivery testing. I’ve got the same unit just bought it. Firmware buggy as hell but it crashes and restarts fast enough to not be a problem.

The multimeter's charging input is NOT isolated unfortunately. Thes should have used Qi charging to prevent safety issues.

FNIRSI just released a ~150mhz handheld dual port oscilliscope, they should be sending that rather than those fad screen DMMs.

Why recharge every 20 hours? Well, you are expected to sleep for at least 4 hours in a day/night cycle, it is not like 1 day battery hour is uncommon nowadays, and on far more commonly and frequently used devices - like say pretty much every phone, tablet or laptop you extensively use unplugged throughout the day. So recharging your stuff just becomes one of those things you do, like wash your feet or brush your teeth before you go to bed. And in those cases you need to use the device for even longer periods of time, you seem to already have power bricks ;)

20 hours is pretty good actually. I remember buying a brand new laptop and it could barely last 4.5 hours on a full charge, not even enough for a longer transit. Nowadays ultra portables are doing in the low double digits, but most laptops will still barely last 5-6 hours of heavy use, which is pretty much what you get to work out of an 8 hour day in a corporate environment, the rest is just pointless meetings.
