HIP FILE:

Inspired by the crack destruction method shown on the SideFX website for the movie "Encanto," I attempted to recreate the technique and enhance it by adding more details, debris, and dust. Ultimately, I developed a procedural setup for this type of effect that can be achieved using just a single drawn curve as input.

The setup involves using PDG to cache and render the effect, employing the Axiom Solver for simulating smoke, implementing a custom recursive fracturing algorithm to prevent manifold geometry issues, and utilizing a custom displacement map shader.

Made in Houdini, comp in Nuke.
