Know What You Own:
Stay within your circle of competence and focus only only operating in areas you know best. “What an investor needs is the ability to correctly evaluate selected businesses. Note that word “selected”: You don’t have to be an expert on every company, or even many. You only have to be able to evaluate companies within your circle of competence. The size of that circle is not very important; knowing its boundaries, however, is vital.”
Look For Good Management:
At a high level, Warren Buffett looks for Intelligence, initiative, energy and integrity from management. In order find good management for stocks, look at sites like Simply Wall Street, Glassdoor, and the company's own Investor Relation's page to understand the truth about how management is performing.
Find Companies with Economic Moats:
Understand the Business Cycle:
According to Investopedia the Business/Economic Cycle is defined as the fluctuation of the economy between periods of expansion (growth) and contraction (recession). Factors such as gross domestic product (GDP), interest rates, total employment, and consumer spending, can help to determine the current stage of the economic cycle. Fidelity does a great job of showing where the major economies are in the business cycle
Seize Great Opportunities:
Missing out on an investment can hurt worse than a bad investment. If you go too small this can also be a mistake. Warren Buffet admitted that he has lost Billions of dollars for Berkshire Hathaway by doing this. These won’t show up in any stock performance reports or statements
