I worked with some guys that were S&P 500 millionaires through their 401K plans.They just invested in the S&P 500 for about 30 years and left it alone. Also our company didn't even have a 401K match.

Everyone is always quick to advise against buying individual stocks but no one examines the reason why people lose money on them.
