* Spoilers *

It's hard to explain all that is going on in this scene without context, but suffice to say that it's one of those beautiful scenes in film where things fall into place and people's paths intersect. There are some brief moments of original score in the film, as well as various songs, but for this crucial scene the perfect match was this 1973 composition by Greek composer Vangelis. 'La Petite Fille de la Mer' is a piece he composed for a French nature documentary titled 'L'Apocalypse des animaux'.

Starring Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah and Tom Hulce. Directed by Marc Forster.

It's a shame too many people despise Will Ferrell's typical acting and stupid comedies too much to even consider experiencing this masterpiece of a movie.

What's crazy is that he can still hear her in his head planning his eventual demise but actively chose to go through with it anyway. What a great movie.

Emma Thompson absolutely breaks my heart in this scene. Brilliant film, criminally underrated!

RIP Vangelis. While Will's acting is superb, this song single handedly raised this movie's profile among the legends.

In a cold movie with poor choice of colour filter, when you don’t expect anything but the most unexpected beautiful moments ever made in cinema.

This whole scene is heartbreaking, but the little boy thinking it’s his fault kills me every time.

This movie still makes me cry, and rather aggravating to see yourself reflected on-screen, and the transition you're undergoing too.

I know people who will not see this movie because of Will Ferrell's other films. I always try and plead with them to watch it. It truly shows how he actually has an outside talent besides his silly comedies.

Wow. I have no words for Will Ferrell's acting in this movie.

fun fact! This movie haunts me. I remember only this last scene and never remember what this movie is. I’ll remember it and be plagued by the fact that i dont know what movie this clip is from. I searched for literal years until i finally found this in 2019 and had a decades worth of searching validated

"La Petite Fille de la Mer" (The little girl of the sea), composed by Vangelis, originally recorded around 1969-1970. It was included on Vangelis' album "L'Apocalypse des animaux, " a soundtrack for a French documentary. A music executive did not like another track on the album, "Création du monde, " and so held up release of the album for two years. One of many instances that cemented Vangelis' distaste for the music industry.
