"I want the nerds back in charge of everything"

Yes please! This is getting ridiculous.

The crazy thing is, Star Trek tackled these sorts of questions in lots of episodes and with a handful of characters. Without it being overt pandering and without pushing an agenda. Just presenting thought provoking questions and people grappling with the potential answers. So yes, put the nerds back in charge.

Actually star trek started out ahead of its time by having a multiracial cast. They didn't mention it though. They just told a story.

First of all, that character is a symbiot like Jadzia Dax. All it needs to do is inhabit a body of whatever gender it wants to be. No "transition" is necessary. The bigger point is that this conversation doesn't need to exist other that the pandering.

Like old Star Trek had a lot of topics that can be seen as political nowadays but almost all of the things they do is about morality and humanity. The modern stuff just forgets that we’re supposed to actually take the show and characters seriously. Which is hard when the crew speaks to their officers so casually or disrespectfully by cursing when the old series never needed to use cursing to convey how serious something was. Basically the new stuff sucks

There’s an awareness week? We hear about it all year round. Every day.

1) Based on the lore, A Trill (this character's race) would never be chosen to receive a symbiote with these kinds of identity issues... the symbiotes are valued above all else in trill society, if a medical condition or procedure threatens both symbiote and host they will not hesitate to kill the host, just to reduce the risk to the symbiote.

not to mention the sheer irresponsibility of taking someone who already has identity issues, and stuffing their head with OTHER PEOPLE'S MEMORIES! In a DS9 spotlight episode it was pointed out that many of Judzia-Dax's mannerisms were inherited from the previous hosts of the Dax symbiote, and that Trill hosts have to take great care when interacting with friends and loved ones of previous hosts to avoid having their own lives and identities trampled by the symbiote.

2) Based on the medical technology demonstrated in the show, a reassignment procedure akin to the best we are capable of today would probably only take a couple hours, pose none of the risks, and be fully reversible without long term effects if so desired (DS9 had one of its characters undergo this process as part of a political ploy)... While gene therapy could probably achieve a far more complete transition than modern medicine is capable of.

3) TNG addressed this issue DECADES ago in an episode called "the outcast"... however in that instance the subject was from an enforced non-binary culture, but displayed female characteristics. in the end she was forcibly subjected to a "corrective" medical procedure, and while they ultimately didn't have the jurisdiction to do anything about it, Riker and the Enterprise crew did condemn the forced gender conformity.

As a star trek nerd, it infuriates me how badly the people in charge dont understand the history and lore of the show.
Theyre confusing a symbiotic relationship between 2 different species, with someone getting rid of body parts that isnt thiers. Thats not how that species worked at all.

There's an entire storyline in next gen about Data being sentient and being treated as a member of the crew and not its property. The show touched on these subjects often. The only difference is they were written from the perspective of time next gen took place (2360), not some horrible 2023 after-school psa that takes place in the future.

I mean they even addressed this kind of thing back in TNG, remember when Ryker fell for that non-gender alien who insisted she was a she and not an it? Or freaking Dax in DS9, they had several plot lines addressing him being inside bodies that weren't his. Odo was a shapeshifter who wrestled with the fact that his body was a projection he was creating, not a real human body. They addressed things like this all the time, they just did it subtly and with class and complexity and nuance and they allowed the audience to reach our own conclusion most of the time.

I feel like Spock would say “this makes no sense how can a part of you not feel like part of you it’s in fact part of you” I loved him because he is logical
