For those interested. The first few seconds are about half way up Sgurr a' Mhaim on the ring of steall. This mountain can be easily climbed from the top of Glen Nevis in the summer.

One of the best cinematically shot scenes of all time. The protector of Scotland overlooking the mountains which he defends. While his legend begins to spread among the people. Just a breathtaking scene that brings chills every single time. Couldn’t have been done any better imo.

In the beginning of the film, William asks Argyle about the song they are playing on the bagpipes after his father's funeral. Argyle tells him they are "saying goodbye in their own way...outlawed songs on outlawed pipes". The mood is somber and sad and the atmosphere clearly shows that they are trying to keep what they are doing secret and quiet (given that, as stated before, the songs and pipes are outlawed).

In this scene, it is no coincidence that the same song is being played. But now, it is played in a much more upbeat manner, with a full orchestra to back up the pipes. The song in this scene is so much more grandiose because it is showing that the people of Scotland are no longer afraid. They know the songs are outlawed and they know the pipes are outlawed as well. But they don't care, they have hope and they will play their songs loud and proud, now hoping that the English hear them...almost daring them to do something about it.

This is further emphasized by the atmosphere of the scene. Wallace looking out over his home from the Scottish highlands. As the song plays while the camera pans over the landscape, it is a stark contrast to the beginning of the film; where the same song is being played in the dark, with only a few trusted souls around to hear it. Great little bit of visual and auditory storytelling even without the context of what is being said by the locals in the scene as the legend spreads.
