Popeye's Cancelled Movie Was LEAKED! (Sony Pictures Animation Isn't Happy)

Genndy Tartakovsky's cancelled Popeye movie, produced at Sony Pictures Animation, has officially leaked online. Because Genndy's Popeye movie could not be finished, the leak is 87 minutes of animatics with voice acting. SpongeBob voice actor Tom Kenny plays Popeye, and things get wild.

When Genndy Tartakovsky's Popeye movie was cancelled at Sony Pictures Animation, a lot of people blamed The Emoji Movie. However, the real reason Popeye isn't coming to the big screen is simply because Genndy's vision didn't match the executives in charge. While we may never get to see this version of Popeye in theaters, an animatic is better than nothing.

Oh wow, Sony isn't happy it got leaked? Maybe this wouldn't have happened if, you know, they actually allowed the movie to be finished and released?

Ever since I saw that fully animated clip, I was very excited for it until I realized it wasn’t gonna be released. Turns out, it was surprisingly faithful to the franchise as a whole.

It’s annoying how much power these corporations have. Years of hard work from the artists and writers only to get locked behind an NDA even when the movie got cancelled. I’m so glad the leaker gave us this gem and I hope that they stay safe and keep their job 🙏

I actually got to watch the entire movie last night before it got taken down, and not gonna lie, it’s pretty entertaining, heartwarming and funny. I’m very lucky that I got to see the entire animatic and I’m happy that we get to see what the movie could’ve been.

I’m really glad that this Popeye movie is getting another chance with Genndy still on board. As excited as I am with Sony’s upcoming lineup, they shouldn’t have canceled it in the first place. The animation has way more energy and life than anything the Emoji movie ever had.

For once I can say that I do not feel sorry for Sony Pictures Animation. Honestly, it is their loss for ignoring a good storyline for a movie. Plus it revived the iconic Popeye character for modern audiences. I have seen it and Sony loss is our gain since it was leaked.

I remember when Nimona was canceled, some people actually found storyboards of some scenes. They did get privated and people were told not to share. then a few months later, Netflix announced it's offical release. maybe, if Sony sees the positive reaction, We could get it fully animated

I’m sad it initially got canceled, but I can kinda see why. There was a time where movies based on old cartoons from the past were big hits with kids, but eventually that era started to die out. Mr Peabody and Sherman is an example. It was a decent enough kids movie, not very memorable yet not insultingly bad, and it tanked in the box office. Idk if a Popeye movie would’ve been able to attract a big enough audience.

I'm still surprised they didn't try to sell the movie to other streaming services during lockdown or something to make money. Like, when every other studio couldn't make movies or had to work from home and slow down, they were sitting on a nearly or completely finished movie and did...nothing with it

3:02 Actually, there is something that can be done. People have made re-animated versions of classic cartoons in the past, so the idea of taking the animatic and transforming it into one of those Re-Animated collaborations doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Plus, in a way, it could be like a “Thank You” card to Genndy Tartakovsky for all he’s given us over the years.

We had the Sesame Street leak, now the Popeye Leak? This is what I love about lost media, you never know when they’ll pop up.

I’m sorry, Sony, but… You’ve thrown Popeye in the trash, and in favour of the Emoji movie… On what exactly are YOU mad for?!

Emoji Movie: I am inevitable-
Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse: I'm gonna do what's called a pro-gamer move
Popeye: *Carefully, he's a hero*

Sony's mad because we saw the greatness they took from us...what a society we live in. One positive thing I want to say about this canceled version, Tom Kenny and Grey DeLisle are perfection as Popeye and Olive Oyl respectively. I mean it's incredible that the one who voiced someone as wholesome as Wubbzy...is also the voice of someone who advocated for major war crimes for domination like Azula. Grey has such a range.

I’m just surprised they had the entire movie made and planned out

Does Sony even have rights to be mad about this? Literally they canceled this movie for the dumpster fire Emoji movie. So yea, they shouldn't be angry about this cause we're still pissed off and mad for what they did! So we have rights to be mad here!

I hope we could get what we could have wanted back in 2017! I’m disappointed that Sony didn’t accept this completely, and deleted the leaked movie, which I could have been excited for.

Hope we could get more info about this soon! Also super close to 1 million!

I have faith that one day we will get to see Genndy Tartakovsky’s vision of Popeye in the big screen. If Sony Pictures Animation didn’t wanted us to watch the leaked animatic video, maybe they’re still on board with this project. Fingers crossed 🤞

This gets me thinking, theres probably TONS of film Content created that later on got cancelled that we might not ever know exists. Like unannounced films that got cancelled? Its moments like these where people break NDA that might be a curse to the company, but a blessing to the internet.
