This is literally what’s happening in America: people blaming the guns even when the underlining mental health issues and bullying are the real culprits

I was responsible of the guns storage, record, ammunition and maintenance of the whole unit (280 soldiers) while in the Turkish Army. Saw lots of G3’s and other newer guns (which they switched to Turkish made MPT’s nowadays) newer saw this kind of finger guard or never heard such a problem in the army. Suicides mainly happens in the officer ranks, which they carry their pistols 24/7. And it is mostly related to personal life reasons. Only 4-5 case in the last 10 years were about mistreatment.

I served in the Turkish army and none of my friends or me ever had such an idea of shooting ourselves. Maybe because our unit was made of solid men that no one ever thought of bullying

I know two American soldiers who committed suicide on the same fob within weeks of each other. They were both bullied by fellow soldiers.

well old turkish servicemen here (military service is mandatory in turkey) there is no such a thing maybe in some units but i never saw or heard during my time and for the record usually if you are not in operation or combat area you hardly get your gun in your hand besides guard duty or in range which is maybe once a week other than thar guns are locked in the units armory but if youre in an operation area they even let you sleep with your rifle (for those who dont know it was very common that until 10-15 years ago pkk attacks to take place in night hours because there were very little helicopter/aircraft with the night vision equipment then it changed of course)

Guys, this is only done to soldiers with psychological problems, we call such soldiers rdm and these soldiers do special military service from other soldiers and currently the Turkish army does not use g3

Until like 2 decades ago there was an informal practice in the army similar to Russian army's "rule of the grandfathers".
Senior conscripts and higher ranks were abusing, humiliating and exploiting the junior conscripts sometimes resulting in suicides. In early 2000s army issued strict directives banning this practice and introducing severe puınishments to personnel of all ranks.

Sadly. this modification is real. I did my regular 6 months military duty last year. But not all of the G3 guns had the trigger cover. So i think it was made in places where s*icides were a common thing. Also the beatings and stuff are banned in military and it is heavily enforced by the government. A flat mate of mine reported a swearing incident from his higher up to the CİMER (a report system directly connected to the presidents office for all citizens) and the officer got relocated same week due to this. And our conditions got better after this incident in the barracks.

1 year mandatory service reserve officer here. I also had platoon under my command and had these modifications. The guard around the trigger is not for that purpose. Because we have mandatory service in our country, most of the soldiers may not handle military discipline and they might suffer traumas when they serve. (Breaking up with GF, fiancee, family issues, self issues, monetary issues etc.) While they are away home ofc. Military decided to restrain the trigger so that the soldiers don't kill each other purposefully or commit suicide. These weapons also are not used on battlefield, they are used in barracks.
