Padley: The 9-point checklist for a perfect portfolio

If you wrote a list of your New Year's investment resolutions, what would you include? Trade less? Avoid microcaps? Diversify more? Go global?

There are some mistakes we all make, and through his work with financial planners, Marcus Padley sees them all.

So, when we had Marcus in the Melbourne studio this week, we rolled the cameras, poured him a double espresso, and asked him to reveal the portfolio clangers we are all making in this special 20-minute video interview.

First, Marcus runs through the 9 most common mistakes he sees when reviewing client portfolios (see how many are you guilty of)! Number 9 was "not enough exposure to quality growth stocks", so I asked him to then elaborate on how he screens for growth and run through a list of names for the watchlist.

Marcus rounded it off with a remarkable anecdote about one client who put a strategy in place and went on to turn his last $30k into $3.5 million, demonstrating the power of having a defined strategy!
