WBA Super Middleweight Champion David Morrell Jr. (9-0, 8 KOs) delivered a dominant first-round knockout over Olympic Bronze Medalist Yamaguchi Falcao (24-2-1, 10 KOs) to retain his title.

“I’m so excited,” said Morrell. “This was a big moment and a big night for me, so a knockout in the first round is incredible. I think this is the best moment of my career tonight. It was a big event and I had a good fighter in front of me.”

The 25-year-old Cuban phenom made quick work of the usually durable Falcao, who had never been stopped and hadn’t been knocked down since 2018. After wobbling him early, Morrell scored his first knockdown with a right hook that forced Falcao to hold onto the ropes, prompting referee Celestino Ruiz to rule the knockdown.

While Falcao was able to rise to his feet, Morrell sensed his moment and delivered an even more powerful right hook that sent Falcao crashing to the mat, with the referee immediately waiving the count 2:22 into the round.

As he did in the pre-fight build up, Morrell continued to call for an intriguing super middleweight clash against unbeaten two-time super middleweight champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez. The potential showdown between the 26-year-old Benavidez and Morrell would pit two of the division’s top contenders and exciting young action-fighters against each other in a matchup of unbeatens.

“David Benavidez is next,” said Morrell. “Where is he? I want to fight Benavidez. He’s next, 100%. I don’t want any other guys at 168-pounds. Just Benavidez. I respect Benavidez and his team, but inside the ring, I don’t respect anything.”

It was refreshing to see how he backed off after that first big shot. He has to be careful and not let opportunity slip, but i think it shows real character that he didn't immediately jump in and try to pile on unnecessary damage.

Obviously still young and not as many fights but he looks to have the skills to make it tough on any of the top 168-175ers

Morrell has the potential and will be the undisputed world champion at 175lb division, at 168lb division the guy was avoided by everyone. Now Benavidez won’t run anymore. Morrell will easy ko Benavidez under 10 rounds 🥊

I love this guy, if Canelo is ducking Benavidez, then Morrell is who DB is ducking!

77 inch reach, that's a great advantage. The ref should have stopped it earlier, it was obvious Falcao was ill equipped to face the barrage that continued, and would have went on. Really poor defence by Falcao though, and did anyone count how many of his punches thrown missed Morrell?

Another hype. It was obviously much bigger and heavier than falcao.

I think this was a good look at light heavy weight. His training focused more on power due to the nature of components in this weight class but he broke dude down pretty well. Light heavyweight is definitely an uphill battle for Benavidez after this fight but it be cool to see how far he goes.
Personally I think he dominates 168 with a W over Canelo. That said, we NEED Canelo vs Benavidez before it’s too late.

This dude ain't been tested & everybody pushing for him to get Benevidez after 11 fights. He may be good but he got hold in his game. He took a jab straight out the gate through his guard, too anxious & backs straight hands up. He a bigger version of ryan garcia
