How WWI Changed America: Women in WWI

At the outset of World War I, women in the United States did not have the right to vote in national elections and could not serve in the military. In keeping with the spirit of the Progressive Era, many women came to view active participation in the war effort as an opportunity to gain more rights and independence.

My grandmother was a Yeomanette. She enlisted because her fiance (My grandfather) went into the Navy and was shipped to Baltimore as a Yeoman. She got stationed there as well and they got married. When she became pregnant, with my uncle, she was no longer allowed to serve and was honorably discharged. When WWII came along, my uncles went into the Army so she (a grandmother by then) enlisted as a WAAC, became a WAC when it changed, was promoted to Sgt. and served in London and France during the war and in Germany as part of the Army of Occupation.

The US has came along way since we started. Women serving in ww1 basically earned them the right to vote.
