Wheat School: 5 steps to a better winter wheat crop

As the saying goes, if you want to cut down on eating cookies, don't buy them. In that spirit, if winter wheat is in the farm plan, there needs to be seed on-farm well ahead of the ideal seeding window.

That's just one of five key planning steps that Monica Klaas, of Ducks Unlimited Canada, shares in this Wheat School episode below.

Getting seed to the farm is easy, but choosing the best variety is a little more challenging. Klaas suggests starting with the end-use in mind and working backwards from there, keeping in mind growing region and maturity. Plus, look beyond just yield, she says, as other factors, such as lodging resistance, could be a deciding factor.

With the right variety in the bin, field selection comes in to play. Canola stubble is a strong choice for winter wheat given the early harvest and stubble characteristics, but tother fields can work too, such as pea acres.
