I studied with somali students, in our university(in our country) and had a friend. By their attitudes, I never saw the men treating women any less. They respected the somali girls and girls in general. And my friend and other somali girls were pretty confident and their mothers were also quite confident and self made women. By what I observed, It didn't seem like the women were oppressed, or men were more dominant. Infact my friend often laughed about how much her dad is often so scared of her mom getting upset, although her mom is a nice person.

They seemed like normal and good people.

I had to catch myself because like most men my first reaction was to comment on how physically beautiful these women are but the fact that they are obviously extremely intelligent, ambitious and innovative is even more impressive than their outward appearance. Well done ladies, stay blessed.

Eh. I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate. 🤔 I married into a Somali family and there's a huge emphasis in the community to have daughters that pursue education and advance in their careers to avoid dependence on their husband. Family values are huge in the Somali culture, but strong women have almost always been celebrated as well. The Civil War definitely hindered women from entering the workforce, but that simply reflects a biological reality that it's comparatively less dangerous for a man to make a living in the midst of war than it is for a woman.

As a Somali myself I can tell that the only restrictions that can hinder women from driving or doing business is lack of capital/money and not male domination and don't forget Somalia gave women the right to vote in an election long before those in Switzerland did.

As a religious Muslim female who choose to cover half of my face and I'm not even Arab "caucasian" I need to tell you that we live happily inside our houses just like other women
Being a modest Muslim female or stay at home mum does NOT mean we are suppressed at all!!
We can be free, happy, educated, smart, logical, respected and treated very well but you can't tell because we don't make friendships to non-relative males, and we don't show off
Just like there is soo many European/American women which are victims of domestic violence while living their western life and going out with less clothes but no one can tell!!
I think it's time for you westerns to leave others alone, handle your own issues, and stop steriotyping people from other nations or religious, just like we respect your own way of living in your liberal countries.

Somali society is very liberal when it comes to women owning businesses etc the only issue is lack of funds. This guy didn’t look hard enough because most market stalls in Mogadishu are owned by women

Do you why Somali women are strong? Is just because of the harsh environment they grow up in not only they good at business but they take part of battles and fight side by side with their men. Somali women are the backbone of the country may God Bless and protect them.
