I recently found the fall 1989 comedy sneak peek special on a tape by my coworkers, featuring the hits (Family Matters, Doogie Howser, M.D.), misses (Free Spirit, Living Dolls), and obscure (Homeroom, Chicken Soup). Four of the six were cancelled at midseason, with Chicken Soup lasting the shortest. I actually have the complete 13-episode run of Free Spirit and two episodes of Living Dolls, but nothing from the two obscure shows I've provided. Of these, Family Matters is the most fondly remembered, and became a staple for the TGIF lineup (of which the branding for ABC's Friday Night comedy block was introduced that season). Sophomore hit Roseanne was the big ratings winner, with Who's Boss?, Coach, Growing Pains, and Full House still going strong. The most enduring show to come out of ABC of course is American's Funniest Home Videos at midseason, which is still going strong after more than three decades.
