I love this movie, it shows that sometimes the parents don’t have what’s truly best for the kids. Coach Carter didn’t just want to teach them basketball but also how to navigate the future while doing it.

It's such a sad thing to hear a fellow black person say about fellow black kids.

"Basketball is the only thing that these boys have got!"

That's one hell of a way to say that you have no hope in them other than what you think they're good at.

If basketball is all they have, then they have nothing.

"Are we gonna let him take that away from them!"

No mam he he not taking basketball away from them, those boys are taking basketball away from themselves by not following the contract.

Bro, and even if they're gonna keep playing basketball, if they can't keep with a contract in high school, how they're gonna keep with a contract as pro players

“We are nothing without basketball!”
“If you’re nothing without basketball then you shouldn’t have it”

The first word of “student athlete” is “student”, no matter what extracurricular activities will ALWAYS be lower in precedence to graded school activities and CANNOT interfere with said activities.

In the real world, EVERY administrator and parent would have had Coach Carters back, but they gave everyone the angsty teen logic of “this non-Academic hobby I have is all I have in life so you can’t take it away when I do bad in school!!”

Edit: I’m not gonna lie, I only just recently found out that the first thing I said “the first word of student athlete is student” is actually IN this film

Texas is great, 'No pass, No play." Period, if you're failing, go sit on the bench and study, come back next week with better grades

Not to mention only a slim fraction of kids who play basketball actually get to have a career in basketball — whereas most kids who keep a good gpa end up successful. They’re treating their children’s lives like lottery tickets — all or nothing. You need the best of both worlds to be successful no matter what

This is wild. When I was in high school, to be in varsity sports, you had to at least have grades in the high 80s out of 100

When she said basketball is all he has I cringed. The fact he'll grow up to do something in basketball is slim to none. If that's all he has, then you've already set him up to fail life.

Yeah, and then you can look up what happens to pro prospects who get injured or lose their skills. Dudes go from the MLB to bagging groceries!

If basketball is the only thing they have, I guess they don't have parents. This kind of attitude is why I left teaching.
